By whose definition? Collarme.com's? MiRC chatroom protocol? Yahoogroups? The LordGrandPoobahOfBDSM?

In my opinion a collar means whatever the two parties agree it means.

I don't hold with all this "one size fits all" stuff I see out there. Every relationship is as unique as the people involved in it.

I refuse to let anyone else define this lifestyle for me. It's very appeal is that it's a creative, unique and intelligent way of interacting, and I see no reason why I should get in a box created and labelled by some so-called "experts".

The levels and gradients of different collars are exactly what you decide they should be.

Their significance is up to you to decide and agree upon with the person whom you share the collar with.

There are people who believe that there is, or should be, a "one size fits all" standard of BDSM. Mostly, I snicker or feel old and tired, depending on how many of them I've seen that day.

Whoever told you there was such a standard code was either pulling your leg or expressing thier fantasy life. I've been around a while, and I've seen the hanky code, the keys/chains on this side/that side code, and the gorean silk color code - but I've never even heard of this one.

Welcome aboard!

As stated above, it depends on the people involved and the significance that they put to the collars.

For us, there is the 'training collar' - simple, cheap, and the closest vanilla equivalent would be trading classrings in highschool/college to show that you are attached. It's a choke-chain type of dog collar with a padlock as the clasp.

Adding a tag to the collar pushes the significance up to that of an engagement ring - the relationship still isn't permanent, but definately solid and moving that way (we may also decide to change the collar to something a bit ... classier ... than a dog chain, we haven't decided yet, and since we aren't to that point with anyone yet, we have time).

As for the Collar - that is the equivalent of Marriage and will be given after the boy has married whichever one of us he is to marry legally. That one will be something that we all pick out together, just like a wedding band, and will probably include an engraved plate on it.

But that's just us ... we know others who think that we are retarded for it ... others who think it's the greatest thing they ever heard ... and others who think it's weird, but since they have their own system, they don't care.

I have to go with the theory that a collar will mean whatever you want it to, but having said it, there will always be someone out there who will tell you otherwise and that if you don't agree with them that you "aren't really a s**(**)"

I've been living with Master for just over a year now and do not have any sort of collar. It's enough for us to just be a couple for now, though perhaps in a few months we may have some sort of "commitment" ceremony which includes a collar, for our kinky friends

I agree with the majority, the collar should mean whatever you and your Owner want it to mean. I just started training and we bought a cheap black leather dog collar and added a ring to the front. Then bought a bag of rhinestones, 1 added after each training session if I earned it. I have my 1st. After collar is full and I have completed my training, to my Sirs approval, I may get the pretty pink rhinestone one I seen in a site I saved for a graduation present. Thats a long way down road tho, and I have a long road to travel.

There's the "on" collar and the "off" collar. :)

Pretty much what everyone else has said- the collar is a symbol, thus it means whatever you put into it. Some subs don't wear collars at all.

But you most often hear the three collars "collar of intent" "collar of consideration" and "collar of ownership." I don't put much stock into this as I think it's kinda fluffy and confusing, but if people enjoy it, then have at ye!

For me, I'm owned, whether I'm wearing or in possession of a collar or not.

Hello rocker,

Well, as you have seen on this thread so far, a collar can mean anything, so it doesn't really mean anything. If I could put you in a time machine and take you back to a leather culture soiree in 1960, and you saw someone in a collar, it would mean one thing, and one thing only; you were looking at someone's owned slave. It was a symbol of ownership. No more, no less. There are small islands within the big pansexual kink ocean where it still means that, and only that, but don't expect that to hold throughout eveyone who is somehow "not vanilla" and so wants to go swimmin' in that ocean.

When you see a collar now, it can be anything from a symbol of ownership to a fashion statement, or anything in between. It can mean anything, so it doesn't really mean anything. You have to ask. And do be careful. "Hey, pretty collar, are you owned? "Owned? FUCK YOU! Do I look like someone's doormat to you? Are you trying to say that I'm not entitled to wear a collar unless I'm owned??? Who the hell died and made you god?????" "Well, yes, OK. Hmmm.... Er.... nice tight-fitting leather neckwear you have there. Did you buy it online?"

Hahahah one of the BEST stories I have was of the first time my biological mom saw me wearing a black leather collar, VERY obviously a "black leather collar."

Her response was "Only gay men wear those!"

Since we live near Johns Hopkins, which does sex change surgeries, I told her that it would be possible if she really wanted for me to do that. She said no and didn't say much more about it after that.

I found it highly amusing.

You are only out of touch if you are worried about knowing the answer to this or worse think it's important.

Now if you want to know something that IS important, follow this link and be careful if you have the wrong color sticking out of your pocket.

Both are used as symbols to show others what you're "flagging" as.

Also as a point that collars don't really have any specific meaning while hankies generally do, so if you want to show someone something specific, a hankie is better than a collar.

While in a class at a recent convention (Dom Con in Atlanta) a discussion on collars was brewing and the variations of meaning as well as important, and the need for individualized acceptance was being bantered. I recall one splashily dressed gent, I shall call him "Lord Grand PooPaa of HooHaa" stood and solidly said.....

"all this talk of various collars is fine, but a real slave collar is easy to tell as it LOCKS and is a "real" collar..."

Actually I giggled loudly at this to which he gave Me a stern look. Just a funny remembrance to Me as how seriously some do take their collars.

I prefer to use all variations and all elements of importance. I've a locking collar for My slaves (currently two) (tags read "Property of Lady T") which I like using a lovely, metal more formal collar for special occassions or just plain black leather for everyday, and I do use a training collar (tag reads "In Training to Lady T"), and I've used just a plain collar as a "collar of consideration" (no tag) and I've heard these types are often blue in collar (mine was just plain black) and I've given a "collar of protection" (no tag), as well as the usage of various styles and collars that might match My ensemble or the outfit I've chosen for My submissive - you know that type thing is such a priority in My world!! *chuckles* I usually stick to a plain, black leather for personal, committed collarings, and more fancy-dancy, studded, or playful ones for nights-out, sessions, playmates, and such. When My collars have been given, the reason and importance is clearly conveyed between Myself and My subs - I could care less who else sees whatever meaning into them, but I am sure My sub would convey the correct meaning of their collar if asked or approached. And, I do feel that a sub wearing any type of collar should be approached with respect until their collar is clearly defined. Heaven forbid if I start flirting with a cutie who I assume got their collar at Hot Topic because it looks sexy only to find out that sub and collar belong to Another who is none to happy that I am so disrespectfully and thoughtlessly chatting/talking/flirting/touching their property ..... so when they are collared, I often am cautious in approaching or speaking. Just Me.

Great links, Beach Mystress!!! I think the variations and meanings are good to know, but then it's important to make the meaning your own!!

It was really funny actually - the group I was sitting with all busted up and we were giggling like crazy. But, it was weird to actually SEE the separation of the "Grand PooPaas of HooHaa" and the "regular folks" 'cus the PooPaas all nodded and clucked-clucked over how right he was, while the rest of us shook our heads, snickered and openly talked of how "it is what we make it"!!! Later, we flirted and teased him "Lord PooPaaHooHaa" - hey, I confess that degree of dedication...dressing as he did and being so immersed, it's impressive in it's own way. Anyway, I think we might have upset him a bit, but then we charmed our way out of his gruffness and he partied with some of us the rest of the night, so all was good. But, that statement will always be stuck in My head!!
