I agree with everyone who has posted here, a collar is whatever the two people involved want it to mean. As for me and my Master, I am collared. It serves for me a reminder of who I am and helps me to feel connected to him. I now have two collars, one is a blue dog collar with a ring on it for my home wear, and the newest one we bought at an antique/flea market, which is my public collar, it is a gold tone choker with an antique look to it . This is special to Master and I since we both love antiques and yet no one is the wiser as to what it means. I feel naked without it and before we bought my public collar as soon as we got home and in the door my collar went on. Just how we are, as stated for everyone it means something different for me it is my connection and a reminder of my committment to Master. Hope this made sense, I am proud to wear my Masters collar.

I wear a pearl necklace everyday as my "secret" collar; when I get home this is replaced with a simple black leather buckle collar which I also sleep in (we don't live together so I have His permission to take these two off and on at my discretion). When we are alone together I wear I lockable leather collar - I do have a key but only for absolute emergencies - and I also have a dog collar for when He doesn't consider me to be human. Needless to say I adore the lockable one and feel wretched in the dog collar....

"Whatever it means to you" works for me.  The only time I'm physically in a collar is when we are home alone together and not planning to head out anywhere.  It's a big thing.  I've been thinking that an anklet (symbolic - with a lock & key) might be nice for wearing out of the house but haven't mentioned it to him or found one that sends me.

seem to be out of touch. can anyone explain to me the different types and levels of collars and their significance

You are only out of touch if you are worried about knowing the answer to this or worse think it's important.

Now if you want to know something that IS important, follow this link and be careful if you have the wrong color sticking out of your pocket.

Whoa... way too complicated for me.

For Valyraen and I, a collar means a certain level of commitment, much like an engagement or a wedding ring. This is why we have been together over a year and I am still not collared. However, I still feel very owned and very cherished, his little kitten. A collar, as everyone has said, is only what you make of it.
