Lorelei115 -> You know you're from MASS when... (2/7/2007 10:41:50 PM)

The Michigan one put me in mind of this. *grin*

It holds true for NH and RI as well.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE FROM MASS WHEN:
The person driving in front of you is going 70 mph and you are cursing him for going too slow.
When ordering a tonic, you mean a Coke...not quinine water.
You actually enjoy driving around rotaries.
You almost feel disappointed when someone doesn't flip you the bird when you cut them off or steal their parking space.
You know how to pronounce the names of towns like Worcester, Billerica, Haverhill, Gloucester and Cotuit.
You have driven to New Hampshire on a Sunday in order to get beer.
You know that there are two Bulger brothers, and that they're both crooks.
You know what they sell at a packie.
You know at least one bar where you can get something to drink after last call.
You can actually find your way around Boston.
Evacuation Day is a recognized holiday.
You know what First Night is.
You know at least one guy named Sean, Pat, Whitey, Red, Bud or Seamus.
You think the rest of the country owes you for Thanksgiving and Independence Day. (And the y do!)
You have never been to Cheers.
When the words 'WICKED' and 'GOOD' go together.
You knew that there was no chance in hell that the Pats would move to Hartford.
You have gone to at least one party at UMass.
The curse of the Bambino is taught in public schools.
You own a "Yankees Suck" shirt or hat.
You think Doug Flutie is the greatest athlete ever.
You remember exactly where you were when the ball rolled through Buckner's legs.
You pray for the Red Sox to win the World Series not this season, but in your lifetime.
You know how to make a frappe.
You know that "Big Dig" is also a kind of ice cream you can get at Brigham's.
You actually know how to merge from 6 lanes of traffic down to one.
You never go to "Cape Cod", you go "down the Cape".
You think that Roger Clemens, Wade Boggs and Derek Jeter are more evil than Whitey Bulger.
You went to Old Sturbridge Village, Plymouth Plantation, or both, on field trip in grammar school.
You're aware that there is a town, somewhere in Massachusetts, named Brimfield where they have the biggest outdoor antique market in the world.
You can drive to the mountains and the ocean all in one day.
You know that the Mass Pike is some sort of strange weather dividing line.
You know that P-Town isn't the name of a new rap group.
You know that Ludlow is 90% Portuguese and that Fall River is 90% Lebanese.
You do not recognize the letter "R" as a part of the English language.
You've called something "wicked pissa"
You have driven to either Rhode Island, New Hampshire or Vermont for a tattoo.
You see people like Steven Tyler (Aerosmith), Dicky Barret (The Mighty, Mighty Bosstones), and Evan Dando (The Lemonheads) in the local supermarket and it doesn't phase you.
You've slammed on your brakes to deter a tailgater
Know at least three Tony's, one Vinnie and a Frank(ie)
Paranoia sets in if you can't see a Dunkin Donuts, ATM or CVS within eyeshot at all times.
You keep an ice scraper and can of de-icer on the floor of your car...year round
You still try to order curly fries from Burger King
You order iced coffee in January

You drive 45 minutes to New Hampshire to save $5 in sales tax
You've pulled out of a side street and used your car to block oncoming traffic so you can make a left.

You know what a "regular" coffee is
You actually get these jokes and pass them on to other friends from Massachusetts.

I LOVE this list, and identify with most... was going to look it up myself, although, now, the Redsox thing has to be fixed... [:D]

I was living in Boston as well the night they won, was crazy here I tell you, people screaming and running down Boylston street... was very exciting, until around 2:30 am and I had to get up for work in the morning... trucks blaring and drunks screaming wasn't so fun anymore... lol

I edited to add this:
I didn't see anything about "banging a U-y" or was that a phrase only me and my friends used in highschool (for making a U-turn)..

Actually, funny thing is Peter Wolf (J. Geils) is one of my many, many neighbors... lol

*Laugh* I knew you'd get it. Its funny, I saw the one about ordering iced coffee in january and I was like... there's another time to drink it?? Yeah, that redsox one is old now I guess. I had a newer version of this on my myspace bulletins that had some even funnier stuff, but I can't seem to find it. [:(]

I have to say, right here, right now that I do not have that accent anymore... accept one word: drawer (I say draw)

MissDiscipline -> RE: You know you're from MASS when... (2/7/2007 11:27:35 PM)

I too have been able mask that inherent inability to pronounce the "r" at the end of a word.  But I mean  ca mahn waz da madda if I cant say ddrwaw - I just cawl um dressa drwaws anyways. Oh yeah if any you guys want sumtin- put cha  orda in now.

MstrssScarlet -> RE: You know you're from MASS when... (2/7/2007 11:27:48 PM)

I was born in Massachusettes (if you can spell it, you're probably from there) and although my father was in the military, my mother's family all lived there.  I used to visit my grandparents as often as I could and I can relate to a LOT of the things you listed.  My favorites were the ones about shopping in New Hampshire and all the sodas being called tonic.  The older generation sat around the table in the evening and drank a very strong coffe they called demitas (sp?).  It was served in very small coffe or tea cups and my guess is that it was the Italian version of expresso.

Nikolette -> RE: You know you're from MASS when... (2/7/2007 11:40:54 PM)

Aww that was great.

I wasn't raised here but I've spent the better part of the last five years living here, first in Connecticut (where most of those are true too) and now in Boston.

My favorite part was the regular coffee thing since my first job in CT was at a..... you guessed it. Dunkin Donuts. It was the primary source of all my coffee lingo and when I go back to Missouri and order one people are like .... what?....

Siona -> RE: You know you're from MASS when... (2/8/2007 2:03:23 AM)

Yep, does make me home sick!
I lived in Gloucester, Danvers,Peabody.
Worked at Mass General.

I still say wicked good...after all these yrs of being gone.
I said something about a packie yesterday as a matter of fact...they just looked at me like I had 3 heads.
I lived by a DnD in Danvers...they knew my son and I by our first names. I should have taken stock in DnD!

Yep, yep, yep, miss back home alot.
I don't miss the cold tho!

See, that's a sign I really was born and raised in Massachusetts... I don't take my coffee "regular" so, I never tried to order it like that outside of  New England, but, I would've assumed it was called regular everywhere [&:]  ooopppsss...

Well, I take my iced coffee regular, but, last time I went on vacation someplace else in the US, I still didn't find iced coffee... had to ask for hot coffee and a cup of ice.... lol

I remember my Aunt and Mother giving me my first coffee when I was pre-teen and it was an iced coffee...

Lorelei115 -> RE: You know you're from MASS when... (2/8/2007 1:03:04 PM)

Another accent thing is to add random R's to words too, anyone notice that? My mom says "sodar" and "idear". Maybe thats an NH thing, I dunno. LOL

sensualmagirl -> RE: You know you're from MASS when... (2/8/2007 2:03:00 PM)

No, I think you are right actually, they add r's where it shouldn't be there and take them away where they should... pizza -- pizzer... hanger -- hagah (pronounce the "g") LOL  I never did this, but noticed others doing it.

I also have a friend from my home-town outside of Boston that elongates everything -- hair is "haaiyeah" and leg is "leeeeeg"  she also pronounces the g in hangah

Have you also noticed we make everything longer than need be? Maybe it's me and my family/friends, but, I always say "Grocery Food Store" where Grocery Store would do... hehehehe

Saratov -> RE: You know you're from MASS when... (2/8/2007 4:59:41 PM)

[sm=smile.gif] Well, those New Englanders seem to like to hear themselves talk.... maybe that's why the elongate speech so much. [sm=wave.gif][sm=dance.gif]
