What is a recommended MMORPG that is highly entertaining, easy to pick up (REALLY easy) and maintain, and doesn't require 4+ hours a day or some ridiculous commitment to enjoy?  I rarely have time to get involved in something like a MMPORG because my time online is sporadic and can be limited.  I'd really like to have the opportunity, though, to see what it's about and perhaps be amused.

Is that possible without having your life sucked away, though?  I don't have that kind of time.

I've always thought they were boring too.....but then based on my adventures in a local componet supply house.... I think I'm in the minority. I've watched folks purchase very new and expensive video cards for the price they could just about obtain a brand new system for -- Just to play these games.

I generally do not enjoy role playing games, and I'm not sure these even really technically qualify.  But they can be fun and you are limited to how much you can play for free so you might take a look.  Of course neither is PC either.

Almost all of the games require a fair sized investment of time if you ever hope to have a character that can do much of anything. A lot of basic or low-level characters, to put it bluntly, are worthless.

And these types of games can quite easily become addictive if the person playing them has certain personality types.

If someone goal oriented were to find these types of games fun they could, quite easily, become sucked into playing for hours while trying to reach a certain goal.

If someone who possessed obsessive compulsive traits were to begin playing he/she could just as easily wind up fixated on the numbers involved in these kinds of games. A friend of mine finds it almost impossible to leave the game without first making sure that all of his stats end in a five or a zero.

However, the initial levels in stats and/or skills can be fun and quickly earned in some of these games. And if someone interested in these types of games were able to restrict themselves to a certain amount of time per day/week/etc. building one's character can be a fun way of indulging in a bit of fantasy.

In order to get a feel for this type of game I'd suggest starting with a free-to-play game such as RuneScape. http://www.runescape.com/ I could help get you started if you'd like since I play RS from time to time.

And if it holds appeal after trying it out for a little while you could switch games if you'd like, depending on what most interests you about the game.

Do you like high quality graphics? Do you enjoy battling enemies or learning spells? Do you want to play your character with groups of other people for the social aspect of the game... or do you prefer to play in a more goal oriented manner in order to level your stats quickly when logged in?

Depending on the way you play and the sort of things you want to be able to do with your character you'll find that different games are more appealing.

I'd suggest doing a bit of reading about the various games available.
Below you'll find a (by no means comprehensive) list of MMORPGs:

RuneScape
Neverwinter Nights
World of Warcraft
EverQuest
EverQuest II
Ragnarok Online
City of Heroes

Try Runescape, as listed by MadameDahlia

It's fun, addicting, and easy to stop, and pick up where you left off.

I guess it would depend on how "hardcore" a gamer you are as to which game you would like. I personally play World of Warcraft along with my sub. You can take it at your own pace and there are quests that you can do, some relatively quickly. There is also PVP which is something that I enjoy and that too can be done quickly. The level top is now 70 .
I have played EQ I, I havent tried EQ II so I can't really cannot comment on it. EQ I got boring for me. I played Dark Ages of Camelot which was really a good game, it just was never real popular. I am not sure why. I have heard that Never Winter Nights is alot of fun.

Good luck,

NeverWinterNights.  There are kinky adult-only servers that are actually pretty classy and nice, the game play is fun and addictive, and online play is completely free rather than costing an extra monthly fee.  And if you are so inclined, you can build your own fantasy world and run your own online game.

I'm not sure you'd currently call it 'massively multiplayer' yet, as the full version is released to gametap on Feb 15 and as of yet is only in beta, but URU LIVE is the newest in the Myst pc game franchise and it's online live.

I love these games.  You dont have to hone your rapid mouse fire skills to progress, you just have to be able to piece together clues to solve puzzles (often so cryptic and subtle they make you crazy).  The game is wrapped around beautiful graphics and sounds and a thick back story that you can get as involved in (or not) as you like.  There is space for significant In Character play as well as no IC play if you prefer.  You can progress through the "ages" alone or you can invite people to help.  There are puzzles that require multiple players to complete, but those are not an integral part of the story line.  You can invite people to help you in your own puzzles, you can assist people with their puzzles, you can hang out and talk to folks in public places, etc.

I've long been a fan of Myst, although I never played the other games in that franchise.  I found that not having the rest of the story didn't handicap me in any way in playing URU Live.  You have to join gametap to play, but the first month currently is only 99 cents so you can sign up and see if you like it well enough AND get access to other rpgs that gametap also offers as part of your subscription.

They're premiering a new age on the 15th or 16th of this month with the launch of the non-beta version.  It's a good time to try it out.

Bah - screw Wow.  (tho i do have an account - lol)  It DOES suck your life away.  Terribly sad.

i vote for Savage.  http://www.s2games.com/savage/

Its completely free and the game has pretty much gone to the players.  Most of the players set up their own servers for 64/100 ppl to play on and bam.  Been a few patches on it (as we've taken over the game and S2 has let it go) so if you need any help getting it set up, look me up.  If i cant help you, i'll get one some one who knows.  Good group of people, i know alot of the regulars and they're all pretty friendly.

Pretty much its two teams.. one beast, one savage...... each teams has X amount of players (depends on whose on the server) and a commander.  Commander builds base - team members go out to destroy the other teams base.  Buildings are built, weapons researched - you level in game.  Officer's lead the teams and officer status is dependent on how good of a player you are (or in my case who you know).  A team wins when one team destroys the others stronghold.  Live action.  IE you can walk up and swing on an opponent, kill him and watch him die.  (hehehehe)  It can be abit violent with all the blood and death.. but eh.

You kill, you get killed.  You reswpan to go kill again.  Different "maps" (playing fields) so its always something new...  Alot of the regulars create maps so its got a good cycle.

Each game can take between 4 minutes and 2 hours.   When one game is over a next starts (after commanders are figured out) and wala....

Its a cool game, i love it.  No time needed to be invested.

Did i mention that my favorite part of the game is to run into a battle and drop mines......  so when the opponent is running around willy nilly and steps on one, they get thrown, blood spurts from their belly and they die.

Its a laugh.  Espeically watching the newbs walk over em.  Might be mean of me....  but oh well!  Nothing like taking top kill in a game because twits cant seem to mind the mines.

Which of course "top kill" in the game gets the award Sadist.
