I am going to be in San Francisco next week. What are some good places to check for BDSM scene? I have heard of the The Power Exchange. Any feedback about it? Is it safe for a female to go unaccompanied? Any other spots I should check out?

Although I am originally from the Bay Area, I've been in L.A. most of my adult life, so I've not been to the Power Exchange; nevertheless, it is my understanding that the Power Exchange is more of a swingers club with some BDSM themed areas, rather than a D/s BDSM club.  As a single woman, I would expect your experience will be being propositioned for sex by couples and single men, depending on which floor you're on.

Most of my experience too was in Southern California. But I have been to the Power Exchange.
When I was last at the PE, except on certain nights, the top 2 floors are male only.  The basement level has a number of BDSM play spaces.  I was there with a female friend. We were almost the only women in the building and we were watched over very carefully by the staff.  I did not feel unsafe at all.  However as Ben said, you will likely get propositioned A LOT.
I beleive they still have a website and there is probably a calender of events there.

Power Exchange isn't for the faint of heart and is the only place I would advice against women going alone or even in a small group.  Personally I love the place but I am 6'2 and people give me and mine space.

There is LOTS to do in SF both educational and play related.  Where else do you have multiple choices of what BDSM thing to do on a Tuesday night?

Things I would recomend...
The 20th is the TNG munch for younger people
The 21st is Bondage A Go-Go which is a bdsm dance club
There is a cool class at QSM
Play parties at the Citadel or Odyssey

Riotgirl,

If you want to know why I advise againt a woman going alone to PE, read the thread on masterbation and some peoples comments on places like Paddles in NY.  It isn't a BDSM only club and makes its money on allowing voyuers to come in and wank off.  They don't respect boundaries or even know of them, it is up to YOU to enforce them.  Some people can and others can't enforce a suitable boundary, if you can't, then don't go, if you can and love sleaze, it is a fantasy come true.

I've been to the PE alone, Michael's right - if sleaze is your kink and stepping around pools of goo on the floor is your thing, then I'd recommend it, otherwise...

I found it to be safe enough, though I did feel a bit uncomfortable because I remember it being kind of like a maze and I didn't know my way around well.  They've started charging single men a fortune to get in to discourage the wank fest (which hasn't really worked), but other than some BDSM themed rooms, I didn't observe anything remotely BDSM there.

Not sure what night you went, perhaps it was a couples/swinger night.  The bottom floor has a caged off area in the center that is always full of  perverts beating each other, I have been there when there were at least three or four groups of people doing a whole variety of scenes and you couldn't find a place to play.

Again, if someone wanted a conventional play party amoung fellow perverts PE isn't the place to go.  Part of what I love about PE ARE the wankers who invade your scene.  I get to play bull elephant and roar and posture a bit and that is fun as I don't tend to do that in the scene as the need to project boundaries and chest thump against other males isn't often needed.
