This sounds weird I know but as newbies, my partner and I are wondering: How does someone use a safe word if she (or he) has a ball gag in place???

Use a safe gesture or hand signal?

I would have the submissive hold a ball in his/her hand. If she drops the ball, that's an indication that something may be wrong.

(Although, she may be just headed off to "space" and developed a loss of muscle control. She may be a bit frustrated that the scene stopped...but it's still an option.)

Snapping fingers works better than a held object. You can't accidentally drop your fingers.

As January said, hand signals are often used. I prefer an auditory signal, such as a snap of the fingers or a knock on an available headboard. I want to make sure that a "safe word" is communicated. Sometimes if the submissive is bound as well as gagged, it can get tricky. You have to watch for the safe signal instead of listen for it.

Personally, I do not gag a sub. I want to hear the noises they make. If there are neighbors to consider, it is the sub's duty to keep quiet. I personally have allergies and often am restricted in my breathing, so I worry about restricting anyone elses breathing. Even the ones with breather holes seem a bit scary for me. I'm not into breath play.

Thanks all. I think the finger snapping is a good idea as she will also possibly be cuffed. We're kind of feeling our way here so the suggestions are appreciated. And I agree with the whole breathing issue. I have a hard time breathing through my nose sometimes and a ball would quite possibly cause problems for me so I am very sensitive to this.

[8|] Watch the body signals. Of course you must know your sub very well for this, but if you are going to bind/gag your sub you should know them very well. Especially watch the eyes, and feel the skin frequently. If skin starts to become clammy STOP The eyes can tell you much. Also finger snapping or a bell or other auditory signal can be used as well. No matter what type of signal you elect to use be very observant none the less. Binding and gagging can be very arousing for both top and bottom, but care needs to be exercised.

Two distinct 'grunts', or twice stomping of a foot is usually pretty doable, and I know a lady who rubberbands a squeay dog toy into her boys hand. I've always considered simply using the squeaky toy as a gag, myself...

There are a couple of gags available that allow breathing. There are ring gags, open mouth gags, plus all the dental and medical ones. One note. I've been told that the bit gags are as breathing restricted as ball gags. They look like they'd be a bit better to me, but I was told no.

There are also whiffle ball gags (made from whiffle golf balls.) They sell them, but considering it would probably cost you $3 to make 6 of them... buying them seems a bit outrageous. (You can get the balls at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000AU463/002-2675046-5004034?v=glance for $1.79, pk of 6 if you don't have a local store that carries them.)

Oh yes, by the way, drool happens, especially with open mouth gags.

Oh I love it. One more original gag idea.

I figure since I adore raw egg gags for the extra challenge, they could always crack it. Lol. But then again, I don't like when it gets messy.

If you're inexperienced, dropping the ball is actually a pretty good approach- better to err on the side of safety, after all. Lots of subs can't remember signals and safewords when they need them, but if she gets into real trouble she'll drop the ball automatically. As you gain experience, you should be able to 'read' your sub and know how to keep her safe, and just below her safe-out threshold, without any signals at all. I believe this is where you want to be for any kind of extreme play, because there are a whole host of reasons a sub may fail to use a safeword or signal- relying on the sub completely for this is just not safe.

Rather than a ball, which can be missed in a noisy venue, I prefer a handfull of chain or a hand sized bell that will be heard if dropped. I have also asked bottoms on a bench to raise their right hand for yellow and left for red, I tend to focus on body language, so a well raised hand will definately get my attention.

As far as dropping it in space, it is my own personal experience that I command my hand to hold the chains tightly no matter what. I go deeply into space, becoming limp, but will not let go of the chain.

I like this idea, and if there is something REALLY wrong you may see the ball go past you as well.

I think a lot depends on the "how" you are bound and gagged. If you are on a bed or similar structure where knocking on the headboard or some other solid object is a good idea. But if you are standing and your hands are above you, I prefer to use a bright piece of cloth and wind it gently in the fingers, that way it doesn't drop accidently and you have to work at it to drop it. As I said, I prefer it to be a bright colored cloth so that it's easy to notice even out of the corner of my eye.

I haven't read all the responses, so pardon me if I echo anyone else.

Bells in the hand. Dropping the bells = safeword.

shay -> RE: Safe word - With a ball gag?? (3/12/2005 2:31:15 PM)

I personally always used a red scarf.. Dropping that creates a pool at the feet and is quite noticeable.. what a bunch of WONDERFUL ideas!!!

Yes indeed it does! [:D]

And if you LIKE the little added humiliation that the drooling from an open mouth gag affords (can't swallow, don'tcha know) place the occasional drop of honey on the tongue.

hahaha then get ready for the flood! Hahahahahaha Be careful not to do this if they are laying on their backs. Noplace for the saliva to go and they can't swallow. Saliva in the lungs could be a problem.

While the auditory sound is good, I still prefer the gesture. If I think they dropped it accidentally, I'll put it back in their hand and see if they drop it again. I'll use this kind of thing even without the gag...I like my scene music really loud sometimes.

Hayvin -> RE: Safe word - With a ball gag?? (3/13/2005 1:15:47 PM)

Regarding the ball: I would recommend something along the lines of, say, a racquetball, since it's small enough for most hands to hold, easier to clench than a tennis ball, and almost weightless.

It's also interesting to note that (vanilla) toy companies now make various models of balls with LEDs embedded that actually FLASH when bounced, for all of you folks worried about "not seeing it when it falls"

OrientalMistress -> RE: Safe word - With a ball gag?? (3/13/2005 3:24:59 PM)

Quite simple, little one, ...with a hand signal ... such as a sudden slap of a breast ... or if the hands are bound ... pushing away an object on the floor, like a box of cereal...

Should the mouth be gagged and feet and hands bound ... then, although a bit more difficult and one that forces the Domme to pay very close attention... use the head and eyes... e.g.

Throwing the head up and back quickly as you blink rapidly with your eyes...

I do hope this helps...

Madam Jade
