wideeyes -> advice for first time needle play? (2/17/2007 2:17:29 PM)

hi all

so i've been online and here in the forums trying to find some more specific information about needle play.

Any links and/or thoughts are appreciated but i'm also specifically wondering what guage you'd think would be best to start with (for a self-proclaimed chicken with a sadist dom )

thanks

Well, I've only played a little with needle play, but, I was a medic in the army and was a pretty good 'stick' for drawing blood and giving injections.  So, for what it is worth, some general advice and info (and sorry if you know any or all of this, just putting it out there).
1.  Since it is blood play, use gloves.
2.  You should also have some sort of 'sharps' container for your used needles.  Don't just throw them in the trash.
3.  Make sure you clean and disinfect the area to be pierced.  Alcohol wipes, povidone/iodine swabs will work.
4.  What areas are you going to be piercing, and what type of piercing?  Are we talking some of the more sensitive bits or just skin (like, on the back or buttocks, etc).  Will it be a straight in poke or a 'through and through' where the needle pierces the skin, runs under, and then comes back out?  This will determine what length of needle you will need.  If you want to just 'poke', get short little needles.  For through-and-through, you'll need longer needles.  I would say probably 1.5" at least, 2" might be easier.
5.  The bigger the number of needle 'guage' the smaller the needle.  So, a 18 gauge needle is much wider than a 25 gauge.
6.  Probably something like a 22-25 gauge needle might be good to start with - http://www.cottonballs.com/servlet/shop?cmd=I&id=BD305156 - but this is really a matter of personal preference.  I would say start smaller and then work up to the heavy gauges.
7.  DO NOT recap the needles after using them.  This is the #1 source of accidental sticks.  Remove the needle from the sub and immediately place it in the sharps container.

That's all I have so far.  If anyone has anything else, please add or correct as necessary, thanks!

being that you are in a major metropolis, my advice would be for you and your top to take a class in needle play or at least find someone who is known in the community for their needle play expertise and ask for a demo or a learning session. It is a serious form of edgeplay in which blood and needles are involved. I wouldn't attempt it without the knowledge and supervision of someone familiar with this stuff. Thankfully my body piercer and tattoo artist is a lifestyler, so he has offered to teach me if and when i want to learn.

I'll second the take the time to attend a class, get some hands on instruction from someone who knows needleplay well.
TES might be a good place to start searching for someone to teach you together.

Ditto what everyone else said. I am a needle play beginner myself but I've never *really* hurt anyone and had no complaints thus far.  I would start with 22 or 25 gauage, they are very thin. Do the piercings horizontally through areas of the body that are well padded (ass, inner thighs, breasts, pectoral area) and not anywhere near where blood vessels are close to the surface.  As always, make sure everything is sterile.

There is no way that I would do needle play without taking a class.  When I saw it done the first time, I nearly passed out.  It is very dangerous, and you need to know what you are doing.

...BootBlackBlast and Archer thank you for the reminder. I do tend to forget about all the amazing resources that are available to me in NY.  I will certainly look into taking a class.  And thanks especially to DominaSmartass :) (great name!) for the advice on needle size.

...i will take it slow, as advised.
