RosaB -> "300" The Movie (2/20/2007 6:47:48 PM)

Have any of you seen the trailers for the movie "300"?   The commercials I've seen of it, on TV, make it look spectacular.  I'm not much for all the fighting and such, but the visuals, the way it appears to be coreographed, well, it blew me away.

Anyone know anything about this movie?  I believe it will be in the theaters next month.

Rosa

Haven't seen it love, is it something I should be looking into?

As far as I know it's supposed to be a artsy super visiony telling of the 300 Spartans the held off the Persian army in Greece....that's about all I know about it. It does look very cool though.

Eidted cause my stupid ass couldn't spell Persian

That's what I'm trying to find out.  I got a good vibe from the visuals I saw, but who knows.  But then I loved Troy, but mainly for  the first fight scene and most other scenes where you know who was involved.   [;)]

It may turn out to be something I can manage to sit through after all.

DomKen -> RE: "300" The Movie (2/20/2007 7:12:02 PM)

It is based on the graphic novel "300" by Frank Miller. It will be a heavily fictionized telling of the story of King Leonidas and his 300 Spartans at Thermopylae.

--Spoiler--

They all die and in the doing make Xerxes reconsider his attempt to conquer Greece. Which thereby saves "western civilization".

Thanks for that link.  It sure is pretty to look at, but I am probably going to have to wait for the DVD.  I probably got carried away when I saw the guy flying through the air and it reminded me of BP.  I don't think I could sit through entire movie of fighting without moving around from room to room when I get bored.  But those visual effect are something else.  But as fast as these films end up on DVD, I can wait.  but then again, there's nothing to compare to the bigger screen.  hum.

Um could some of you women, please, go see it first and let me know what ya all thunk?  LOL.

HEYYYYYYYYY!  Thats just so mean.  [sm=biggrin.gif]   Now I know I'm not going to see the movie in the theater.  I hate sad endings.

petdave -> RE: "300" The Movie (2/20/2007 7:40:08 PM)

Say, Timmy... do you like movies about gladiators?
The commercials make it look like the whole thing was done with CGI... still considering seeing it in IMAX just for the experience, though.
Molon Labe!

wickednnc -> RE: "300" The Movie (2/20/2007 7:55:58 PM)

Imagine Sin City among ancient Greeks...that's about what it looks like in the trailers to me. What else to expect from Frank Miller? At best, the theatrics will probably detract from the story. At worst, the story may be lost within them.

Thermopylae deserves better. It is perhaps the standard when describing the advantages of training and use of terrain.. not to mention an outright fuck you attitude. Great quotes live forever. Several emerged from this battle. When told the Persian arrows would be so many they would blot out the sun, the answer given was "So much the better, we will fight in the shade." When Xerxes demanded the Spartans surrender their arms, the answer sent forth was "Come take them."

Sadness ranks far down on the scale of what this ending should entail. It should linger far behind words like duty, honor, courage and sacrifice.

Actually, I do enjoy some gladiator movies when the fight scenes are balanced with some good acting or some other aspect.  Personally, I want to see the movie for the fantasy aspects, The IMAX viewing sounds like a great idea.  I was mesmerized when I went to see the first LOR in the Theater and I wouldn't have wanted to see that first one anywhere but in a movie theater.  I'm probably just going to end up biting the bullet when its all said and done.  Time will tell.  I belong to a movie group, of which so far I've not gone with them to see one single movie, so maybe this will be the one.  I've been waiting for something worth viewing outside the walls of my own minor home DVD surround sound system.  When you get DVD delivered to your door, curtesy of Blockbuster, well.

I intend to see it in the theater.  I'll post my opinion after I see it.

As for the CGI in it, I dont really mind if the intent is to capture the feel of a graphic novel.  In fact I like seeing the different ways people treat film depiction of graphic novels.  I also happen to agree with you, the trailers look wonderful.

I also am a fan of Gerard Butler, the male lead.  When I saw the first preview I thought "ya know, he's pretty ripped when he wants to be, but that's gotta be CGI or a suit or something" as he looked not only ripped but big.  Then I watched a 'making of' type trailer on apple.com/trailers and realized that dude just bulked up for the movie.  He looked good in the Lara Croft movie he was in, but he didn't have the mass he's got in this movie.  He was the only reason to watch Timeline.

I didn't know it was going to be released to imax.  I may have to hunt an imax theater up for this one.

Pleassssssse don't let this movie be anything like Sin City, I liked very little about that movie.  Thanks for reminding me why its best to wait until every voice has been heard, (of course and still end up at square one).  Oh gawd.  I'm having a bad thread day.

Time to toss a coin.  OK, if the movie group, that I am a member of, votes to go see it at an a time I'm available to go, I'm going to see it and if I don't like it, "300" I'm going to torture the men in the group.  [:D]

MizSuz,

I'm looking forward to your review.  I do so hope it will be one of enjoyment.  Hey the boys get to enjoy those silicones, we can enjoy whatever effects they kick in for us to see on those boys.  [;)]

darchChylde -> RE: "300" The Movie (2/20/2007 8:21:32 PM)

i've been waiting for a while to this particular tale to get the "Kingdom of Heaven" treatment; i expect to be disappointed as i always am when i look forward to a movie... but it's still on my personal must-see list

WyrdRich -> RE: "300" The Movie (2/20/2007 8:23:41 PM)

        Damn.  I'd heard about the film, but didn't realize it was going to be a comic book thing.  I was hoping it would be based on the pretty damn good book, "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield.

      DVD for me

subrob1967 -> RE: "300" The Movie (2/20/2007 9:10:16 PM)

Looks way too CGI for my tastes, I can wait for the DVD.

Of course you won't see it.  It would require actually leaving your trailer and making a miniscule effort.
