I've developed a skin tag on my neck that has become horribly irritated because it is right on my collar line. Doing a bit of research I learned that I can remove it myself with sharp scissors. (Ouch whimper)
Question is, has anyone done this? How long does it take to heal?
Yes it is a skin tag not a mole, I've had a couple before but I can't afford to see a dermatologist for removal.

Thanks!

How tightly do I tie it? I think that is part of why it is irritated, my hair wraps around it ew lol. Oh, and how long did it take to fall off and then heal?
It is sooooooooo ick. I don't know why but skin tags totally squick me out.

They used to recommend a 'course of leeches' to cure 'hysteria' in women as well.

The newfangled way to have them removed is with an electrocautery device.  They numb the area with lodicaine and just zap them off.  Throw a band-aid on it and you're out the door 15 minutes after you went in.

stef I am asking because I can't afford to see a doctor for this. Therefore I am hoping someone else can give me a background on how to do it myself, and the timeline on healing. Oddly I don't normally stock my medicine cabinet with with an electrocautery device lol.

It's doable, but they sometimes bleed a good bit, can be alarming if you're not ready for it.  The cautery tool eliminates that.  I've used emla cream (topical anesthetic), small forceps to pull the tag away from the body and finally a scalpel run parallel with the skin.  Don't be surprised if it comes back in a few years.

Heal time will depend on your body and the size of the tag.  A couple of weeks is the norm.

Thankyou MizSuz :( I was hoping for a different answer heh. Like maybe instantanous healing. This means I have to wait until after my dom goes back home, I was hoping to have it gone by then but he will be here in less than 70 hours [not that I'm counting].

thanks!

I had one under my arm where my belly dancing bra's sequins rubbed, a nurse told me just to snip it off.  I did, I had very little bleeding, and healed up very fast.  A few days later you wouldn't have known it was there. I used a pair of hair cutting sheers that were sanitized and very sharp.  Looking back now though, I'd have to say, I'd rather not have done it myself.  It's ickies to cut something off of yourself, not to mention that even though a nurse told me to do it, it wasn't the safest thing to do.

I once cut a huge part of my finger off while doing a hair cut, I had to bend down, pick it up and throw it away.  Even though the sheers were so sharp that I didn't feel it, my heartbeat was racing with how grose it was.

Luckily in 10 years of cutting hair, I've never nicked a client.

Anyway, good luck, I'd go see a doctor...

Aww ew ew TMI lol. That made me shudder. Yes I agree the concept of erm, trimming my own body is creepy but I genuinely cannot afford to see a doctor over something so minor. I can't really imagine asking a friend to do it either! That would take a mighty good pal

I guess my concern would be if it's a 'meaty' tag.  If the base of it is thin and not much is hanging on, then I wouldn't worry about doing it at home.  If the base is on there thickly or strongly, it could hurt and bleed a lot and could become infected.  Mine wasn't thick, it was ready to come off.

I don't wanna be the one to tell you it's "okay" to do it yourself, incase you have problems. I don't wantcha mad with me.

Nope it is not meaty. It is red and dangly. Another ew heh. Sheesh I'm not gonna get mad at you for trying to help me  . Do you think I could be unband-aided by sunday morning? I'm really debating on doing this today or waiting til my dom is gone but dang it hurts! I think maybe it's slightly torn off.
I am so squeamish, just typing this is making me chant ick ick ick.

Okies so I decide to go all brave and tuff. I find my sharpest manicure scissors, a bandaid, hemostats aka roachclip & rubbing alcohol for sterilization. Everything is laid out in order on my bathroom counter, I like things at the ready for self surgery dontchyaknow.
Leaning in towards the mirror I slowly removed the bandaid covering the hideousness that is my skin tag, yes it is still super swollen and now a dark dark purple. Taking a deep breath to steady myself I gently hold it with the hemostats and scissors at the ready!

It fell off.

Hahahaha. Uhhuh. Yay! It had to have been totally disconnected because I swabbed the spot with rubbing alcohol and there was no sting.

Thanks everyone for the input, advice & help!
