The Back - 3/20/2005 7:46:54 AM

I have a question regarding what can be used on the back, as far as delivering blows. Floggers, crops, I think those are pretty standard.

What I want to know is:

1. Are canes ever used on the back, or are they generally reserved for the butt and thighs? Where else are canes used safely?

2. What about using the bare hands to "spank" the back? Is that safe?

Thanks in advance for any input....

It depends a lot on how someone is using the cane. It's fairly safe to cane someone fairly hard anywhere where they have a good layer of muscle or fat. So that can depend on the person. A muscular guy, I will cane fairly hard on the back, although I avoid the spine. Someone very bony? I would use a cane, but not in the same way that I would on a more padded area. Bony areas generally are more sensitive, so you don't need to use as much force to get a reaction anyway. You don't always have to swing a cane like you are trying to hit a home run.

Given that the body in question is healthy there shouldn't be a problem with caning thier back, as long as you're not slamming hard enough to leave bruises on them. Red marks, okay, but deep tissue bruises? Not good.

Also should be careful- the kidneys are in the back and while moderatly protected they're still vulnerable to mid/lower back shots. Unless you want your sub peeing blood, I'd take care back there.

So cane/slap away, just leave the harder hits for the butt and thighs.

MsSilvie, Vixandra, thanks for your input about canes.... what about the slapping part, same thing? Vixandra, you said cane/slap <G>.... you meant slapping with the hand?

tia again!

Let's be more specific about this question. Obviously great care should be taken in the lower back area as there are no ribs to protect the organs there. In that same vain, the spinal colum would not toterate heavy blows very well either. What cello is asking about is the upper back area between the shoulder blades. Is there a toy or a type of blow you wouldn't use and for what reason? The other night I slapped her back much like a spanking (open handed). Any advice as to that? Canes, I think are light and do not deliver a heavy blow so I don't see a real danger there, spinal or otherwise. Of course any work done on the back is a question of two variables, mass and velocity. Any thoughts or comments on back play (whipping, caning, slapping etc.) would be appriciated.

Canes are usually thought of as light, although then again, you have those heavy suckers like a singapore cane. I've left bruises with a 1/4 inch cane, so I want to say you can hit pretty hard with them. That's why I would really avoid the spine, and, as Vixandra wisely pointed out, anything near kidneys. There's really not a lot of extra tissue protecting either area.

Was there some specific reason you were asking about slapping the back? I don't see a problem normally, but if a sub finds that to be unusually painful, it could be a sign of some other physical problem, and is probably worth getting checked out.

MsSilvie, MrKite was asking about slapping the back because it's my back <G>

I expressed a fear of being injured by it... I can take a flogger or a crop on my back, but the slapping really was painful to me and I was afraid of actual injury to my back.

I would recommend avoiding the lower back altogether so there is no risk to the kidneys at all. You can do cumulative damage over time even with light lower back play.
As far as on the upper back, like everyone else has said it's safest to use floggers here. You could also probably do some light slapping/cropping. I don't know about canes as I've never tried it but I imagine they could pose a fairly serious threat to the spine &/or shoulder blades. I've always been told canes should be kept restricted to the bottom and thighs (the most padded parts). Hope that helps, enjoy your play!

If it's uncomfortably painful, don't do it.

If you are interested in pursuing, make sure you are well warmed up. Sometimes starting slow and working into a sensation helps by giving a sub time to learn to process the feeling too. If you have back problems, or if it's that uncomfortable, you may want to just avoid doing that activity. There really isn't anything especially fragile in the upper back. But there's no reason you HAVE to play there, if you find it painful.

The butt, back, front, thighs, legs, and taps on the head. It's all good. Relaxe, remember your strength, and enjoy.

I've had my shoulder muscles punched with closed fists repeatedly until the breath was knocked out of me with no damage (and some REALLY yummy soreness for several days afterwards), and that was by a guy who we affectionately call "the bulldog" because he's so damned muscular. An open hand would sting more, but wouldn't do any significant damage in that area.

Not saying that this is normal or even common, but I was at a party once where there was a male Dominant playing with a male submissive. He was delivering some pretty hard open handed blows to the subs back. The sub suddenly became extremely distressed. Everyone thought that he had just had the wind knocked out of him, but a trip to the ER determined that his lung had actually collapsed. He had to have a tube inserted in his chest to reinflate it. As I said, I have no idea if this is a normal occurence or why it even happened...just throwing it out there.

Sherry, Erin, thanks for your input. We are not into the use of fists but believe me, I know what you mean about the sting of an open hand! <G> I was really surprised at the intensity of the sting, since floggers and crops actually feel kind of good <LOL>

And Erin, I never even thought about the possibility of a collapsed lung. I was being struck higher than I thought where my lungs are. Somehow I think that must have been an isolated incident but it IS another thing to keep in mind of course.

I think people have covered my questions really well, and I thank all of you for your advice and experience! :)
