A good question, and the answer provides a clue as to why women have a hard time getting a correctly fitting bra...
To determine bra size, two measurements are needed to determine the band and the cup.
The band size is derived by either measuring around the chest directly under the breasts then adding 5 inches, or by measuring around the chest just under the arms and high over the breasts.
The cup size is determined by taking a measurement around the chest over the fullest part of the breast, then subtracting the band size. The resulting number indicates what cup size you wear, but here's where problems arise.
After checking several websites (all reputable lingere companies), I've found that there is quite a bit of discrepancy in just what the cup sizes are. For example, a few of the companies state that a difference between the band measurement and cup measurement of 1 inch indicates a size A, where others feel an A size would be where there were no difference between measurements and a difference of 1 inch would be a size B.
The variations get even more boggling with some showing DD and E to be the same cup size, some leaving E out all together, and some saying E is one inch larger than DD.
For the most part, the following seems to be a fair chart that falls between the extremes... mostly because it incorporates the use of 1/2 inch increments:
0 to 1/2 inch AA
1/2 to 1 inch A
1 to 2 1/2 inches B
2 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches C
3 1/2 to 4 1/2 inches D
4 1/2 to 6 inches DD (E)
6 to 7 inches DDD (F)
7 to 8 inches G
