Has anyone ever visited a site called "Overheard in New York"? Whenever I want to refresh my memory of the great diversity of people in that city I visit this site: http://overheardinnewyork.com/ Posts come from contributers who add the "witty" titles and at the end say where they overheard the conversation.

I remember overhearing stuff like this all the time in the subways or while waiting in one of the many day-to-day lines that you wait in while living/working in NYC.

I read this one today and thought it was funny:

quote:

"Nobody in New York Knows the Difference between At-Home and Outside Conversations "
Yuppie kid: Mommy shaves her hoo-hoo!
Yuppie dad: Okay, honey. Look, do you want your book?
Yuppie kid: I came in the bathroom this morning and asked Mommy what she was doing and she said shaving her hoo-hoo. Mommy shaves her hoo-hoo!
Yuppie dad: Dylan, remember when we discussed at-home conversations and outside conversations?
Yuppie kid: Yes.
Yuppie dad: Well, this is an at-home conversation.
Yuppie kid: Okay, daddy. [Sings to herself quietly] Mommmyyy shaves her hoo-hooo...
Black lady: See, home conversating, outside conversating -- that's bullshit. My kid says shit like that, I smack him. He won't say shit like that again.
Yuppie dad: Okay, thank you, but I think our method works just fine.
Yuppie kid: Lady, do you shave your hoo-hoo?
Black lady: Oh, yeah, that shit is workin' just fine. She's all kinds of polite.
Yuppie dad: Okay, Dylan, this is our stop.

Oh man, this is so relevant to the "honesty about sexual orientation" thread in the slave/submissive forum!

http://www.overheardinnewyork.com/pages/currentfavorites-1.html

"But You Can Leave Your Cute Little Dog Here"
"Tourist to no one in particular: Which way is the gay area?
Queer in black leather gear: You're here.
Tourist: Where are the gay stores?
Queer in black leather gear: All around here.
Tourist: Where are the gay people?
Tourist friend: I think they go out more in the night time, right?
Queer in black leather gear: Go back to Kansas.

Oh!  Mercnbeth, you just disclosed one of my wife's and my guilty pleasures.   We love OHINY.  Why?  well....

And the Number One Reason New Yorkers Move to the Suburbs...
Dude: This weather! It's a beautiful fucking night, isn't it?

Chick: I know! It's fucking amazing, it's just so fucking sweet!

Dude: Yeah, it is fucking nice out, I wish I could take a piss -- you know, somewhere outside -- and not get arrested!

--Union Square

If I can make it there, I'll make in anywhere...

"It's the same thing," he said.

Emperor,
OHINY is a daily read along with the on-line versions of the Post and the Daily News. Only those who lived and/or worked there realize that 'Barney Miller' was the first "Reality TV" show; as was "Seinfeld".

Having the perspective of living both in LA and NYC both very much self professed "Liberal" cities I tried to explain the difference to my west coast 'hippie chic' slave beth. New York may be liberal but nobody there has any time or pays attention to 'political correctness'. In LA, all your words need to be processed and pre-screened to make sure they are 'PC'. In fact being 'Politically Correct' is a bigger priority than being simply 'correct'.

Pragmatic perspective and honest expression is never seen as insulting in NYC. In LA, its safer to assume that what you are hearing from people is as fake as their breasts, and their noses.

Of course OHINY provides an illustration:
quote:

Take That, You PC Fucks!
Chick #1: So, this black girl goes--
Chick #2, looking around: --You know, you really should say 'African American' these days. It's less, you know...
Chick #1: Fucking please. How do I know she's from Africa? My cousin, Maria, from Puerto Rico -- she's black like a boot. You call her 'Africa-anything,' she'll fucking kill you.

LMAO! You know, we could just take most of those and transplant them right into the CM forums, and they'd fit right in. Just rename this one "AnyDom" and "anysub". *L*

Chick: Oh my god, I feel so sore. Next time can you not use the bigger dildo?
Dude: I can try, but I can't give you any guarantees.

For those of you planning on a visit to my fair city, in the future: the correct way to ask a stranger for the time in NYC is emphatically NOT to point to your wrist with a dumb look on your face. Just ask: "Excuse me. Do you know what time it is or should I just go fuck myself?"

At minimum. And if you go to a play don't do this either...

Tourist #2: No, it says here that it's intermission.
Tourist #3: What do you do during intermission?

I've heard thekidfrombrooklyn, some of his stuff is really funny
I do like OHINY to break up the day at work, but I will tell you...most of the people I work with grew up in NY State and have no clue as to most of what is on there.  I burst out laughing and let them read it and they just go "ah huh".

Teen girl #1: Wait, so you just let him do you in the butt? You let him sodomize you?
Teen girl #2: It wasn't bad. I couldn't shit for a few days, though. So I took some laxatives, then I shit myself in the mall yesterday.

40-ish woman: I'm probably just being overly sensitive, but I feel like people are looking at us when we're together and wondering why I'm so much older...
20-ish guy: You shouldn't let it get to you. Look, you're not an egg salad sandwich -- you're not going to go bad after a certain date.
40-ish woman: That's a beautiful thing to say.
20-ish guy: Yes, I'm quite a catch! You should be enjoying it more and worrying less!

Shouldn't we all?

Guy: Look, Jen -- I'll fuck you, I'll spank you, I'll tie you up, and I'll piss on you, but I am not getting back into a relationship with you.
