As for fireplay, kind of the same concept but requires a lot more skill and training.  A little alcohol on the skin and a match, it burns fast and not that hot, a lot and you have a stage 3 burn on your hands.  Since alcohol is clear, people can't see it and the flame can go places they don't expect and again,  OOPS!

A match can burn unintentionally (although the risk is perhaps a fun part of the game). Making torches is fun and it looks way cool. Straight alcohol can burn too hot (also possible another fun risk). Acohol/water mixes are used by everyone I know who does fire play. There's a science behind that. As for clear, if you can stand the smell, get wintergreen alcohol (it's green), then add few drop of green food coloring to make it more green. It's easier to see drips that way.

Some people also use flash paper. This can be as dangerous as anything else. The key here is to use a TINY bit...like an 1/8" square, then work your way up.

wow this is a great post, but both knife and fire play scare the crap out of me even though i trust my Master with my life.  Wax play however is a different story.

MasterFire has said so many good things.  As a couple who not only engages in fire and knife play (and needles and electricity ...) and has taught/given demos at local/regional events my first advice is always to go get some hands on help the first time, especially with fire.  Knives, if you use some common sense and start slow can be pretty safe.

Most of our demos begin with a long long part on safety.  To us, from talking with medical professionals about thinkgs like Hep and HIV, we have arrived at what we think is a safe way to share our knives and not risk the transferre of anything.  After all, I am going to end up with the blades used on me as well, so we do have a vested interest in being careful.  You will get arguements that what we do to clean my knives is not great for the blade surface, but in nearly a decade of bladeplay, our clooection is intact. Fire safety is much much trickier and I just really can't recommend enough that you go watch someone.  Check out weekend long events, many of them will have a fire demo.  Ask around.  If you are a member of a club, see if you can get someone well known to come speak/demo.

Both types of play can be incredible mindfucks as well as being hothothot and such a big power exchange!  I can orgasm from being on the recieving end of either, though knives is easier.  I have been on the recieving end of a knife fuck and when he said ..."now you had better hold very still ..."  OMG ...   lol.  Knifeplay should only be a frightening as the person weilding the knife, and knowing them or their reputation is paramount.  One thing we have never been accused of in knives or fire was being boreing!

Thank you all for the information. Well, as with anything like that I would always like to watch it being done and have my Master learn from someone else to keep it safe. Thank you all for the information. Very helpful.

Knife play runs the gambit from a mind fuck (I'm gonna cut you!) to an actual cutting. Fire play can involve several techniques incuding burning an alcohol mix on the skin, flash paper to fire cupping (creating suction with heat from fire). Some even use fire poi.

I highly recommend you go to demos to see them and to meet people who are competent in them if you're interested.

Do you know how one could find demonstrations? I've never come across any.

i've seen both fire and knife play at local munches or at bdsm clubs. Fire play is cool to watch, but not something i'd be interested in. The mental aspect of knife play i do enjoy and watching it being done.
