Alrighty, Pöplis,

I have a question to you smart'uns out there.

I would like to get a job in the states.  What's the easiest way?

Essentially, I'm looking for Director of Food and Beverage in a hotel, or similar, so H-1B seems appropriate.  But how does one start?

Well, I already am looking on HCareers.com, and there's lots out there.  All of them, however, stipulate that applicants need to have permission to work in the USA to be considered.

So how do I get that?

Well, you could get one of the fine stateside ladies to marry you ;-)

Alternatively, you could try a company like Marriot that has hotels all over the world;  it's my understanding that they'll work with you to help you emigrate since they move people around regularly.   Incidentally there's a lot of good hotels in the Balto/DC/Maryland area.

The easiest approach is to get a sponsor.

Like most things 'who you know' is as important as 'what you know'.

Is the H-1B the one that stipulates you have a "special skill"? I did one of those for someone back on the east coast about 10 years ago for a specializes financing job.

I'd recommend making some contacts and generating some leads. Then following it up with an extended visit having some interviews scheduled. The resort industry is international by nature. Pick a target market and make some calls ranging from the big corporations to the independents. Tell them your goal.

However as I said, it's best to get "insider" information. Find out the name of the decision maker and try to find his/her best friend to recommend you.

Have you tried the Cruise Industry?

Benji, when I saw your post I thought "how hard can this be"?  You know what, between the incredibly fuck-up of my government (Homeland Security) and the unbelievable recalcitrance of your government in adopting the "simplification rules" (see The Fraiser Institute's many reports on CA immigration) -- its very difficult to give you an answer.

A few things I did figure out: 

1.  This only applies to Canadian citizens.  If you are a "Canadian Landed Immigrant" there is a whole different set of rules.

2.  The easiest way to do what you want to do is get a job in Canada with a firm with cross-border business, and then get transfered to a job in the USA.  In that event there are no restrictions.  So if it is at all practical, I'd look at Hyatt, Mariott, Hilton International, etc. 

2.5 (edited to add).  As much as MsSonnetMarwood's proposal of marriage might excite other aspects of your quivvering muzzle, it will not get you employment status in the USA.  The rules re: marriage and immigration status have radically changed in the past few years, and the marriage license is no longer a sure way to stay in the US of A.

Benji, I seem to recall you are a young pup with intelligence and some resources.  Do this right.  Don't cheap out.  It is your future.  And for dog's sake, don't take advice from a pervy Internet crowd.

Essentially, where all of these (surprisingly good, considering the pervy internet aspect of it) bits of info don't help is in this:

Essentially, I'm damn good at my job.  I say this for many reasons, but mostly because no one else will.  The problem is, I have exactly 2 years job experience, and I'm going for jobs that normally take 10 or more.

I know that if I get an interview, I can convince, but getting that interview is tough.

Therefore, I'm going with the "throw enough shit against a wall and some of it will stick" attitude, also being used by Nigerian scammers and Cheap V1agra.

That having been said, Canada offers 5 such jobs, the USA offers 50.  Shit-throwing is easier when the wall is bigger.

So really, transferring isn't an option, because most of these companies are unionized, and promotions don't happen until you're the most senior.

That leaves me with working my way up, and we all know how I feel about work.

I am not sure about this type of visa, but I bet you need the job before you can deal with immigration. The company you will work for will have to sign documents and stuff before you actually cross the border. Here is the U.S. immigration site that can explain almost everything, although in a confusing way, and has all the forms you can print out. There are yearly caps on nonimmigrant employees, so you should first check those also- see if there's even room for you this year. Good luck!

H1-B is not going to help you I don't think. It's for people with specialized skills that supposedly cannot be found in the US. It was heavily used by Indian programmers during the internet boom.

Unless there is some unusual type of hotel/restaurant management that you're a specialist in I doubt you could get a sponsor company to get you an H1-B.

However you should check out what is required simply to emigrate from Canada to the US. I've known a number of people who had done so and it didn't seem to be particulaly difficult however that was all before 9/11 so things may have changed.

Unfortunately, "working your way up" is reality, sorry. 

Checking with the cruise lines is an excellent suggestion.  Also, try the casino industry.  I live near Atlantic City and they are constantly begging for good help in the area you're looking for, and hire a lot of people from other countries, because they can't get enough of us lazy Americans to take the jobs.  If you're as diligent and talented as you say, "working your way up" could take as little as a year or two, since truly good help is really hard to come by.  AC and Vegas are the big casino spots, but there are casinos in many states like New York, Connecticut (the Mohegan Sun comes to mind).  Another suggestion for a place not far from Toronto are the Caesar's Pocono Resorts.  There are 4 of them located in the mountains in Eastern Pennsylvania.  All of these can be found by Googling.

The best way to acquire a work visa which leads to a green card is to be "sponsored" by an employer.  I was told a couple of years ago that this is the better way, as opposed to marrying someone from this country.  Immigration is a LOT more suspicious of that tactic and I have heard that they can put you through hell for 3 or 4 years before they grant you the permanent green card.  In this case, contacting the prospective employers and telling them what you told us is probably the best way to get the ball rolling.  They can tell you what steps to take and what you need.  Good luck!

I maybe should not say this (and hope he isn't upset with me), but perhaps e-mail cloudboy (he is an Immigration Attorney, and he knows the ins and outs of all of this stuff). He may have a specific opinion that may help you. But of course if you'd hire him to help w/Visas, etc. I am sure he would need to be paid (and I am sure you already know that, just sayin because I didn't want him deluged w/-e-mail from others, etc.) But he seems to be very good at his job. He'd probably be willing to answer your basic questions, anyway - he's a heck of a nice guy, and he does give free first initial consultations.

I would hire an attorney , there is a huge immigrant population in Florida but the only ones I know who successfully got visa's or immigrated hired lawyers.

Also everytown here has their own tourism bureau , it would be worth contacting for job leads and possible sponsers.
