another thing about metal handcuffs is to make sure you use the kind with some sort of ring in between the two cuffs, rather than the kind that are hinged (they have no ring or a striaght piece of metal)-see pic below. that way if your submissive slips and falls, they can still bend at the wrist in order to catch their fall somewhat. :)

Just to let you al know I am in law enforcement, Hey even cops are kinky ok?lol I of course use handcuffs all the time in my job and have never had anyone break there wrists with them, of course mine are top quality. I have been handcuffed myself for fun and must say they are very uncomfortable when cuffed behind my back and laying down on my back. Getting laid when on my back with them is not possalbe due to the pain. But never came close to breaking my wrists.

As am I muffin. I'd have to agree with you. They're not comfortable but have never came close to breaking my wrists either. I've been in some interesting positions with the cuffs. They don't play doing high priority security

I have several pairs of handcuffs, and thumb cuffs, too. I seldom use them. I have not heard of people breaking wrists - I suppose that could happen if they were thrashing around and fell on the cuffs, caught the cuffs on something & pulled away or whatever... More likely is a nerve injury - and subsequent numbness/loss of motion. I would not use cuffs for any kind of long term restraint (even 5 minutes), esp if the subbie had their hands cuffed to something like an eye-hook or anything fixed. They can be fun, but you need to use common sense with metal cuffs. Have fun!

okay here is what I know about the anatomy of the wrist. first there are 2 main arteries in the wrist second there are two main nerve bundles located there also, Three the wrist joint is made up of several small bones. the TOY or non doublelocking cuffs can and often do tighten when any outside pressure is applied to them such a a lockee rolling over on their cuffed wrists or perhaps striking them against something solid. if and when this happens there is the POTENTIAL fot the hard metal cuffs to do a crushing injury to arteries and nervesm and perhaps even crush a bone in the wrist.
I am a certified Dungeon Monitor and I will not allow toy cuffs to be used on My watch. I always have a pair of real doublelocking cuffs in My bag. and will loan and instruct anyone on their use and safety

Who is offering 'certification' for dungeon monitors these days?

After Googling "handcuff wrist broken" I have to agree that breaking wrists with handcuffs doesn't seem to be a major danger. I understand that used improperly there is potential for damage to nerves and tissue. But think about it. If it were easy to break wrists with handcuffs we'd be seeing a lot of police brutality cases and the handcuffs updated to avoid the problem. In this day and age, people sue. Think how many people are handcuffed a day in the US. Think of how many of those strenuously resist. If handcuffs were breaking wrists in other than very extreme circumstances, they'd be a monetary liability.

In all these replies (all of which I generally agree) I have seen no one recommend rope in place of either leather or metal cuffs.
From My handle, you can guess that I relish cuffs. But I also relish rope bondage, especially around the wrists and ankles. It often is more comforatble, secure and comforting to some subs.
In a pinch, I love neck ties. Being a good little scout has certain benefits later in life. *WEG*
Stay away from metal cuffs except for show.

I use metal handcuffs and ankle cuffs. They are the kind that have a double lock so that you can put them on as loose as possible and they'll stay that way. I've tried them on and don't think they're painful as long as there's no strain on them.

Hmmm...i personally hate handcuffs as i find them incredibly uncomfortable. i'm a husky girl that honestly does have big bones (stop rolling your eyes ^_^) and handcuffs always have hurt like a bitch to me. i must say, i'm not surprised that someone has broken a wrist using those bastards.

I like the antique style Hiatts made from elliptical stock. Handcuff Warehouse has them at reasonable prices.

A long time ago, I was handcuffed by the actual police <snip> the cops who made the cuffs much tighter.

For about 6 months after that incident I had alternating pain and numbness in my left hand from the wrist to the thumb, so yes they can cause damage.

Let me pipe in here in support of the metal cuffs are best for show and very modified play (such as "arrest" senerios)

I am a neuro-muscular specialist, to get the qulifications out of the way.

The wrists are some of the most delicate part of the body. Numerous nerve bundles run into your hands. Please remember every nerve group in our brain has a branch ending in either your hands or feet (eyes and teeth as well for you info junkies).

The base of your hand is a series of sort of round bones called the metacarpals. These are not strong at all. All the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome stuff you have heard about with typists is related to this area of your wrist-hand connection.

If you will grab your wrist, just past the long bones of your forearm and squeeze, you can get a sense of how 'unconnected' this part of your body is.

So even when using rope for bondage, it is best if you can keep your rope on the long bones of the forearm and away from the transition from arm to hand. Also use multiple loops of rope to spread teh stress over a wider area.

The reason leather cuffs are wide is to spread the stress, hence using cat and dog collars on wrists is best to be avoided, or done in a way which the stress is modified.

Finally, the interior part of your arm and wrist carry most of the blood supply and nerve groups. So when 'hanging' someone by their arms, it is best to place the rings of the cuffs to the inside, so the stress on the arm goes to the outside.

Sorry for all this dry technical talk, but I hope some of you found it useful.

Please return to fun mode now

and boys please remember, eat the Cheetos with your left hand and stroke with your right.

police style handcuffs should be left for show... as Merc said, and I am in agreement, as a former law enforcment agent. Even in untrained police hands, they can inflict permanent damage. What you see on TV cop shows where the cop 'slaps' the cuffs onto the wrist is a definite 'no no' taught by most all law enforcement academies since that can cause major damage.

As said earlier, use the cuffs for show and use leather, bondage cuffs for play. It could prevent one from literally breaking a sub(s) (wrists).

I have never heard of broken wrists but I have heard of some nasty 'face plants' from high boots and and having the wrists restrained behind the back. Handcuffs can be nasty to skin and bones causing abrasions and serious bruising. For those who like the absoluteness of steel handcuffs, we have leather liners for handcuffs available on our website in the restraints department.
