In North America, it is estimated that 50 to 60 percent of the population is affected by winter depression. It is  very common in those parts somewhat north (or south) of the equator. People who live near the equator have a very low incidence of winter depression. Why? Simple. They live where there are enough daylight hours to avoid triggering the hormone imbalance that causes depression. Now, please note that I did not say that people near the equator spend more time sunbathing than northerners. It doesn't matter that they have a better tan. Rather, it is the length of the day that matters. I myself find that in the winter months I gain more weight, sleep more and am more depressed....am I the only one who feels this way? Come spring time, I'm out walking more, opening windows, smiling and doing more things..God, I hate winter..how many more days of this anyhow?[&:]

how about this cold snap?   yikes!

This is one of my requirements in a home, a southern exposre, and western exposure.

Before electricity came along folks slept 10 hours a day.

There are ways to treat this.  Tanning beds (risky), light boxes, watch the carbs (not a big fan of that either).  Winter is not my favorite time of the year, but I'd much rather live where the seasons change.  I love fall and spring and summers in the northeast because they are generally not too hot.

pahunkboy -> RE: WinterTime Blues (3/6/2007 10:39:12 AM)

One winter I went to tanning booth- it helped me feel like it was summer. A year later, mom came donwn with not melanoma, the next step up, a form of skin cancer. When I seen her ordeal and surgery- I now choose NOT to go to tannning booth.

My Grampa was a trucker- he had to have cancer removed from his neck, ???; I suspect- since he ran watermellons FL to East coast. The windshield of the semis cab, magnified the intensity of the suns UV rays.  Car windows, older ones, do as well.

BTW- harmfull rays can penetrate some types of clothing.

Yes, I have always feared tanning salons because of the cancer risk. I am so pale and can't wait to get a little of the real sun on my skin but not too much- don't wanna melt now[8D]

pahunkboy -> RE: WinterTime Blues (3/6/2007 10:56:39 AM)

I suspect- skin cancer is partly genetic. Being that my family has a history of it- I need to watch myself. During the summer, I often place a towel over my left forearm,  the drivers side window, magnafies the UV rays. The folded towel, adds some protection.

BTW my eye glasses have a coating that shields electric rays from computer screen. It was $10 extra, but I live online. So- I had it done.

Furthermore- even as you sit. Right where are. Radiation type rays are penetrating you. ie- radio stations, tv station, CBs, satlilite, cell phone, and any thing plugged in to eceltric!!!

MY advice- is your bedroom, where ever you sleep. Eliminate as much of the elctric thing as possible. Get rid of unnecessary plug in stuff.  This is backed up by science.  8 hours a day- you sleep, and are exposed to that.

I would like to have a bedrroom where no rays get in. Im not sure how to build it tho.

I agree JerseyKrissi. I lived up north for a few years and I used to get seriously depressed when I didn't see the sun for months on end. I even get depressed when it rains in Florida for more than two days. I am a long day/sun-person and I feel alot of other people are too. The only thing that kept my sanity during winter months was the fact; at least I worked outside.

13 degrees. Ugh. The moment my house sells I am headin south. I will miss the seasons changing but not the winter staying!

Ariel -> RE: WinterTime Blues (3/6/2007 11:48:30 AM)

Krissi,

I can feel your depression, [;)], this winter has seemed to be worse for me then others, maybe it is because I'm getting older, who knows why, but YUCK... I'm with you, lets move closer to the equator, or we could all move with jenny  [8D]

angeldevil -> RE: WinterTime Blues (3/6/2007 11:48:39 AM)

We call it Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) over here. Apparently you can buy some sort of light box that replaces natural sunlight.

sub4hire -> RE: WinterTime Blues (3/6/2007 12:57:24 PM)

This is the first winter of my life I have lived an entire winter in winter if that makes sense.
So far I am loving it.  To have snow outside my door.  About the only drawback that I miss is not being able to garden in the winter.
I'm fixing that for next year with a greenhouse, complete with heater so no matter how cold it gets me and my plants will be warm.
People do tend to get depressed in the winter month's.  About the only thing you can do without drugs is getting the artifical sunlight.  It does work wonder's but as you know it holds risks.

Indoors or out, no one relaxes in March, that month of wind and taxes, the wind will presently disappear, the taxes last us all the year.  ~Ogden Nash
