i make all my own soaps with an olive oil base. If anyone else here knows a good recipe using lye and tallow  and wood ash in the more traditional way of making soap, i would  love 2 discuss techniques and recipes as i m seeking to expand the types of soaps i make. what i make now is for bath use, but i want some stronger cleansing soap for washing clothes. it is my aim to never use any type of store bought soaps for any type of cleaning of body or possessions, including my subs

Use human fat.  Tyler Durden would.
"The salt balance has to be just right, so the best fat for making soap comes from humans."

I am Jack's bar of liposuction soap.

But to the OP, I have the setup, but I don't really have time to make it anymore.  A good resource would be the "Feast of the Hunter's Moon", though.  Or perhaps Conner Prarie.  They have soap making booths at the feast (an enormous eighteenth century Voyageur camp reenactment in Lafayette, Indiana) and I'm sure you could find some info from them.  And Conner Prarie is a living history village that makes and sells its own soaps in the gift shop.  It's based in a little town just outside of Indianapolis.  I'm sure if you google the name with Indiana you'll be able to find the official sites, and you'll be able to find some great resources from there.

If you go to the library and check the foxfire series out, there is a big chapter on making lye and lye soap.

you can use draino if you dont want to make the lye, a quick search of the web will give you many recepies for lye soap.

I make soap :-)
I dont suggest using drano since it isnt pure lye and isnt designed for soapmaking.

Deer tallow is great for soap. I have a great recipe that I use

For a 5 pound batch
24 oz virgin coconut oil
24 oz deer tallow
16 oz pomace olive oil
8 oz cocoa butter
4 oz palm oil
4 oz castor

11.9 oz NaOH
28.7 oz Goats milk/Water blend

superfat with 4.8 oz shea butter (6% superfat)

I also add 1.25c colloidal oatmeal

Essential oils/fragrance to your liking/experience.

You can obviously fool around with the recipe.
If you want something that smells great but want to avoid adding any fragrances I suggest superfatting with monoi.

Anyway, I doubt I will look at this thread again so if you have any questions about my recipe please feel free to message me.

well, I really don't know how you can make soap of any kind without it, do you use the potassium shit?

Be calm about draino, you might have cops to deal with if you buy it often, it is used in meth manufacture as well.

Skip the Drano and look for Red Devil lye flakes, if you can.
Azz, I have a great book filled with vegetable based cold process soap recipes. I'll have to look for it and send you some of the better recipes. =)

I used to make cold process soap a while back but lye is too hostile a chemical to have around Ums. The recipe I used was very simple... olive oil and coconut oil. Anyway, I'll look for that book tonight. =)

Cheers,
Stella

Be very cautious in dealing with lye, it is very caustic and will burn your skin quite easily.

I tried making soap once. Everything I added to it made me itchy as hell.  I am not sure exactly what I was having issues with, but I was never quite brave enough to try it again. With both of us having sensative skin, and he being very prone to allergies around scents.. im going to stick to Ivory

Ummm.... I made soap with my aunt once when I was little. I don't remember how we made it, but I remember that I got to add an iridescent powder to it so that it was shiny. I felt like a princess whenever I took a bath! Ok so that was less then helpful. Yeah... check the local library!

After watching Fight Club, I've always wanted to make soap as a hobby. The idea of using human fat off lipo suction patients rather than pig lard is an interesting idea.

As for a sent, I'd like to see what Satyr Oil would do for a soap.

I make biodiesel with waste vegetable oil the formulae is:
Vegetable oil
Methanol
Lye
the end result is biodiesel and the generic equivilant of neutragina soap.
Lye can be obtained from any chemical warehouse for about 60 dollars a hundred weight.
Methanol is about three dollars a gallon when purchased in quantity.
The formulae can be found in the book "from the fryer to the fuel tank: by tikel
One hundred gallons of vegetgable oil , 20 gallons of methanol and a small quantity of lye equals 100 gallons of diesel fuel and 20 gallons of soap.  Most restuarants pay about one dollar a gallon to get rid of their waste vegetable oil.

Potassium salts (lye) leached from wood ash will produce a very soft soap.  The leaching process is fairly simple as water is gently poured over and allowed to slowly strain through the ash.  Pioneer women used a log hollowed out to form a basin with holes in the bottom to allow the water to drain out and be collected.  Sticks and twigs lined the bottom of the basin and then the log was filled with ash and water trickled over.  The resulting liquid lye was then tested for strength with a fresh whole egg.  An egg that sank very slowly indicated proper strength... one that floated indicated lye that would need to be diluted, and if it sank too quickly the liquid needed to be run through the ashes again or boiled down.

I presume that you are familiar with how to render tallow as even the finest Castile soap recipe contains it.  While I don't have a specific recipe for a basic leached lye and tallow soap, as most recipes I have indicate a ratio of approximately 86 ounces of fats to 43 ounces of lye liquid, if I were to experiement, that is where I would start.  Note that the ounces mentioned here are by weight, not measured in a measuring cup.
