We are talking about phthalates in sex toys. They are what make the jelly dildos and toys so soft and cushy.  I first heard of this two years ago. At the time all I could find was a review on WomynsWare http://www.womynsware.com/ citing an article by a German Magazine.
quote:

ORIGINAL: http://www.womynsware.com/Side%20Menu/BuyerbeWomynsWare review of Crystal Jelly G-Spot dildo

" A recent study of jelly dildos and vibrators commissioned by the German magazine Stern (issue 31, 2001-07-26), reveals some alarming volatile chemical compositions. Toxicologists conducting the study were very concerned over the “extremely high concentrations of solvents” found in the sex toys, solvents that were sure to be absorbed into the mucous membranes of the body. Off-gassing of Phthalatens sufficient to settle in the liver, kidneys and other fatty tissues occurred at up to 100 times the acceptable European standard (1000 ppm is the maximum accepted softener due to the interference with hormonal metabolism caused by Phthalates. Dildos and Vibrators tested had concentrations in the 240,000 ppm range!). Other solvents found in the sex toys included Cyclohexanon, Phenol, and Tetrahydrofurane. These chemicals provoke eye, respiratory, skin, and mucous membrane irritation. Headaches, cramps, and nausea are some of the side effects that result from exposure at the levels found in the study."

Now there is more available. Greenpeace has even gotten into the act now. http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/MultimediaFiles/Live/FullReport/7938.pdf  If you find their report a bit scientific or daunting, try reading http://sexuality.about.com/od/sextoys/a/phthalates_sex.htm Personally, I'm not willing to take the chance with either myself or my husband. We replaced all of our jelly and soft dildos with silicone when I first learned of the concern.

I also had to get rid of all my jelly dildos last week.
Every time I used them the next day the skin on my clit would begin sloughing off and I'd get a yeast infection.
I thought maybe I was just using them too vigorously.
This started last year when I bought my first jelly toy.

I kept asking my GYN about this study due to hearing rumor of this report in this site.
She said she didn't think the dildo was emitting gasses & maybe I wasn't cleaning them well enough or something.
I also assumed since I'm allergic to latex maybe it was related to that.
Well 10 days ago or so I again tried to play with this one dildo I just love.
I even put a condom over it.
Sure enough the next day I was raw and itchy.
After going to the Doc to confirm yeast I came home and threw away all my jellys.
LOL that was most of my dildos.
I have a little cheap white hard one now and that's it.
I like you have decided it's not worth compromising my health.

I'm so very surprised in an office with a team of 8 OB GYN's that these Doctors have not heard this. I have to assume others have come to them with issues these dildos brought.
I think I'm going to print the OP and mail it to my Doctor and beg her to share this with other doctors & all their clients.
Thanks BeachMystress for finding these articles for us.

http://www.tantusinc.com/ this is the official site and they don't sell from it. It's just a good place to see what is available.

Heres a good one for ya.  I purchased a jelly about 11 years ago and I just threw it out about three months ago.  It was at the bottom of my box and was just sort of forgotten thing that was never really used because of the taste being so bad (couldnt eat the poor girl after I used it on her)
Anywho.  I had some other stuff that was butted up against it in the trunk and went to pull it all out everything was stuck together.  The dildo had melted into the other plastic devices... includeing and get this... I had some small anal beads (too small to be any fun so they too were on the never use junk pile) and it liquified the plastic from the beads and melted them together.  I have been kind of out there telling people not to use that shit but no one really cares.  If I had photographed what this thing turned into it would shock people. It looked fine from the top but go to pick it up and it was a gooey mess of variouse types of plastics welded together by the jellie.  I was getting into manufacturing my own dildo (I should say getting it manufactured) and found out that basicly selling it as a novelty pretty much lets them get away with anything they want.

Yuck! That is worse than anything I experienced. I just dealt with the discoloration, smell and sticking together. I'm surprised how few people are willing to pony up the money and buy a whole new set of dildos, even knowing that there may be a problem. A story like yours would have had my dildos in the trash in 10 mins if I'd not already switched them out. When something like that happens with a toy, you know it can't be healthy for ya.

www.tantusdirect.com

You can buy the silicone toys made by Tantus, direct from the company, and they even have a closeout section! I've been replacing most of my rubber toys with silicone because it is sterilizable and can be used with multiple partners safely.

I have had problems with latex toys melting into one another, melting other plastics (HARD plastics!) and staining. I find silicone far superior.

You can buy from their site now??? How wonderful! Last time I was there, they just showed product line! I'm off to check out the closeout section. One can never have too many dildos. ;-)

Someone mentioned the Greenpeace link no longer works, so here is a current one. http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/contentlookup.cfm?ucidparam=20060908125938

Also! You can get amazing soft toys made from silicone now, too. They are similar to cyberskin in feel, but without the toxic evilness. The Vixskins collection from Vixen Creations are certainly my favourites.

I only have a couple of jelly toys.  I just don't like them.  I find them too soft and squishy, and they smell nasty.  However, now that I know they're toxic, they're getting tossed today.  The silicone toys are just as soft, but not as yielding.  So between my couple of silicone toys and my magic wand, I should be fine till I can afford more.
