Status: offline 		I've recently come into about a pound of steel rings for mail, and I'm wondering what you folks would do in my situation. I'm thinking about making something kinky, apparel most likely. Does anyone have any suggestions, sites, plans, or even photos that they could share for a little inspiration?

There are a lot of nice/fun items on Chainmail & More which I adore - but of course, we can't afford what we want, so I just go and drool on a regular basis.

Status: offline 		If the links are steel and not some sort of alloy, you probably have enough to fill a small cereal bowl. Enough to do a G-string and pasties if you're lucky... If you're making anything more ambitious than that, you'll need a bigger supply of matching links.

You can make a modern mandrel ( a mandrel is an ancient tool for turning steel wire into coils for chainmail...) to turn links on your own with a power drill and a steel bar. Invest in welders gloves. Turn steel wire on the bar into coils, then you can cut the coils into links.

Once the coils are cut into links, close half and slightly open the other half. I used to do this while watching T.V.

Actually making chainmail is pretty simple too, just very time consuming. Especially if you try to get into fancy patterns and personalized fittings. Some decent sources have already been listed. I'd start there...

I'd recommend picking up two pairs of linesman's pliers for opening & closing the rings. Saves a lot of wear and tear on the fingers. Well worth the investment. I've gotten a couple hundred hours out of the Stanley pliers I picked up at Wal-mart, and they're still going strong.

Status: offline 		If you're going to go the plier route, you might want to look at picking up some smooth jaw pliers. They won't leave teethmarks and scratches in the rings. As another solution, you can make tools which I found to be easier to use than pliers and a fair bit cheaper.

When I was slinging rings back in the day, I took a couple of *big* hex wrenches (17mm I think) and cut slots in the end of the short leg that was just a hair wider than the diameter of the rings I was using. After a couple of dunks in the tool-dip, there were nice non-slip rubber 'handles' on them and they were much easier to use than two pairs of pliers.

Status: offline 		edit - I just realized that I've always misread the wrench trick. Gonna have to try it again now that I have it right :)

I haven't had much trouble with pliers damaging the rings, but maybe it's because I usually work with larger rings (around 1/2 inch). I've heard plenty of people who complain about the issue, so it certainly seems to be a valid concern. The standard answer seems to be "file down the teeth on the pliers" but this makes the grip a bit slippery when you're trying to work. Another suggestion I've occasionally read is to cover the teeth with that shrink tubing you sometimes use to cover wire splices. Can't say I've ever tried it, though (as I said, I haven't had much trouble with my out-of-the-box pliers marking anything up).

Status: offline 		I have a chainmail bra I used to wear when I was belly dancing. :) I padded it, hand sewn, with velvet.

I've seen the chainmail bikini bottom and top.
