I tried that "Karma" thing once, it doesn't work for shit!
Bad people get richer and have it easier in life, mean bastards hit the lottery, and good people get fucked over all the time and suffer for the rest of their lives.
Not a very good track record for the believers in "Karma."
So when does that "good" Karma kick in?
In THIS lifetime, right?

Hahaha! Right on!

Ditto for that "God has a special plan for each and every one of us" bullshit.  What, like God has a plan for the diseased, starving 18 month old baby living on the streets of new Delhi? What, pray tell, could THAT plan possibly be???

So here is a query for a lazy Sunday evening for you all.

What code of ethics do you live by?
Are they based on a particular philosophy, spirituality, or religion?
Or are they yours alone?
Have your ethics changed over time or because of a life-altering event?

Please, no flaming of others beliefs!

hello vendaval

I live by the same code of ethics that I was raised with. I was raised Southern Baptist, and my father was a Marine. Many of the lessons that I learned growing up are ones that I still live by today.

i wish you well

i try to live by the golden, rule with a twist "Do unto others as i would do unto myself'.  Therefore, i have to love and respect myself first to treat others in that manner (which i do).

Other than that, i like what Arpig said "In any given situation there is a "Right Thing" to do...try to do it."  That is what i try to do too and when i don't, i take responsibility for that and don't try to make excuses or blame others for my errors/weaknesses.  i just try to learn something better for the next time.

hmm. maybe if you judged by the religious concept of karma, rather than the popular notion of karma, it'd be a bit easier to understand.

I am a firm believer in "if the end justifies the means, than the means are justified." Also, whatever works, and as long as you can face yourself in the mirror at the end of the day, you're not doing too badly. I've seen too much bullshit to beleive "people get what they deserve" So I take care of myself and refuse to feel ashamed for doing so.

fast reply, being raised with no firm or guiding hand, i didnt have others peoples ethics to be taught to me as my own.

the only thing i truly live my life by is, "dont lie, dont gossip". i bet you can tell i was about 13 when i learned this one, but it has kept me out of trouble.

ethics can be such a slippery subject...

but for me, for short, Honor is important.  treating others well until they prove they dont deserve it.  not doing anything that will leave me not being able to look my Deities in the face and say proudly/defiantly "and?!?"

 - Shoot first, ask questions later.

Are they based on a particular philosophy, spirituality, or religion?
 - They are based on life experience (no good deed goes unpunished).

Or are they yours alone?
 - Mine alone, I would guess.

Have your ethics changed over time or because of a life-altering event?
Changed over time.

One aspect of Buddhism which might clarify things for you, popeye1250, is that altruism is considered the act of giving selflessly to other people.

However, to a Buddhist, nothing exists outside of one's own consciousness, and while one can start with the concept of their perception of reality, the ultimate goal is the alleviation of external distractions.

In short.  Nothing exists outside of one's own consciousness.

Taking that as one of the central tenets of Buddhism, practitioners of Buddhism tend to be extremely altruistic in their actions.  Which is completely counterintuitive, since there is nothing outside of one's own reality to be altruistic to.

Why do they do altruistic things?  Because the action of doing good things, being nice to people, working to make a better world, all cause an increase in the person's mental health, nirvana, and happiness.

I can work with that.

Devout Buddhist meets Reno 9/11?

p.s. Not sure where you live, but here in California people frequently say thank you when I do nice things for them.

Please dont assume that I am Buddhist myself.  I have issues with that particular religion.

I am, however, educated about the religion.

Honesty loyalty and Honor are the only thing you can carry with you to the grave so let it be my lifes work to carry as much of that with me as I can

“The boondock saints” quotes that i agree with

Connor: Destroy all that which is evil.
Murphy: So that which is good may flourish.
MURPHY: Do not kill. Do not rape. Do not steal. These are principles which every man of every faith can embrace.
Connor: These are not polite suggestions, these are codes of behavior, and those of you that ignore them will pay the dearest cost.
(amazing movie if you ever get to see it)
