Johnny Depp's character, as portrayed, has a very deep understanding of human values and ethics, and yet is willing to put these aside because the one he loves really needs him/her to do so.

If he really needed me to do something........NEEDED......I would be more apt to put aside my moral standings to help him. If he is bored and wants to see how far i will go for true love than I will disappoint him I am sure.

I know what he expects of me. He has the same moral compass as I do. He wouldn't ask me to something against what I believe. Howerer this is a hypothetical question, so if he did ask something like that of me, I would have to weigh out his need against my conscience.

...Given a hypothetical situation where your Dominant asked you to do something which you felt ethically uncertain about, would you trust this person to not lead you astray?

indubitably.

Still, celeste did, correctly, point out that the given example (from the film) really points to doing something illegal...An action can be illegal and still be the ethical/moral thing to do.

With enough trust earned and built?  Yes.

If I had an ethical / moral problem with something Master asked me to do I would do as he asked as long as it was not illegal or stupid (as in the walking on broken glass scenario). He is my Master but I have a brain for a reason.

Personally this is where choosing a Dominant wisely comes into play..if chosen wisely, you know he/she will always have their submissives best interest at heart..so then such worries become a non-issue..Tempting

~fast reply ~

I was thinking about this today.

In the past, my answer would have been without hesitation or thought. I would have done anything he asked, right up to putting a gun to another and pulling the trigger.

Yet, thinking about it now; a bit older, a bit wiser...I doubt very much that I could find it within myself to trust another to that point where I was willing to unquestionably, and blindly, follow his lead. Not sure, but I really doubt it.

That's a really depressing thought [&o]

RowanJ -> RE: Edward Scissorhands (4/12/2007 11:36:41 PM)

I will never serve someone I do not love.  And love includes absolute trust.  Some call me a prude, but I will not give myself in any way to a person I do not plan to spend the rest of my life with.  Having said this, I would do ANYTHING for that one person in my life that provides a constant for me.  It is always acceptable to request an explanation, but if (s)he really needs something, even if it is illegal, I would do it in a heartbeat.

Hypothetically, yes.  I tend to transfer authority and that includes moral authority.  The authority transfer is easiest if I'm uncertain.  In a lot of ways, the whole point of relying on an external authority (re:Dominant) is to relieve me of various uncertainties.  I wouldn't be with him if I couldn't do this.

i was raised to believe all sin is in the motive not in the act itself so that one can do a "wrong" thing but for a "right" reason.  For that reason it would be more difficult to do a seemingly ethical thing but for a totally unethical motive.

i am reminded of the couple where the wife accidentally killed her underage sister with chloroform because her husband wanted to rape the sister, and then went on to kidnap, torture and kill other women for her husband's pleasure.  Was she the epitome of the obedient slave?  Now of course, these actions should not have been considered "ethically uncertain" but at what point is blind obedience just a horror show?
