I'm trying to find a ponyplay type tail that can be worn with a costume (not a plug type.) I'm going to an anime convention as a pony girl (animorphs of all kinds are welcome of course at this convention). I have looked everywhere and can't find one that can be worn over clothing.

I found one at http://www.costumesinc.com/c121_g437/horses_mane_lion_tail_skunk_tail_costumes.html I don't know anything about the site at all. Or if it will work with your costume. Depending on how crafty you are, you might be able to make one using doll hair.

I have a friend that is into pony play big time, and she made a tail herself, from a cheap long hair wig, which matched her own hair color ...... it was an easy project, and the result was fantastic, as the color matched, giving it a very real look.

A tail extension would probably be the best route to go, attaching it to a belt or beneath a skirt. They are a lot more expensive than plugs running about $80. Now if you had your own horses and a lot of patience you can just braid your own.

i found an actual horse tail at a renfest years ago... meaning, the portion of the hide was cured and attached to a leather belt. Since the belt is black, it looks great over black clothing.
They're not cheap, but apparently they make tail extensions for show horses... shouldn't be too hard to attach one of those to a garment.
Most cost-effective choice is probably a costume wig... good idea there.

How about having a hair transplant to the small of your back then you can grow a real tail.

www,statelinetack.com has horse tail extensions, you can't exactly match your hair color to their choices though and the custom ones are priced through the roof.

Speaking of the buttplug ponytails, they all seem to be crap, even one made by so-called BDSM craftsmen, can't anybody make a good one?
All this country needs is a good, reasonably priced ponytail plug.

I'd have to recommend this one: http://www.bdsmtoybox.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=139

They have lots of different leather colors, and you can get it in a corresponding hair color as well.

try Tandy leather or the Leather Factory for real horsehair, then attache it to a low hip hung belt. easy to do, and realistic. The horsehair also makes a yummy flogger.

I have seen someone who has had to stop being flogged because of damage done by a horsehair flogger. They are known for leaving small broken hair particles beneath the skin. It set up sub cutaneous infections that just won't heal - and that was 4 years ago now. I cannot recommend them having seen the mess they made of his back

Can you dye horsehair? You wouldn't want to use regular hair dye but craft dye - although it might be hard to color match with that stuff.
