I realize that wikipedia is very fallible, but their pages are often well put together, and they are sourced. I often look at the sources and the external links before I refer to them. I would not use them for an academic paper either, but if I want to know more about something I did not know before I will read through wikipedia.

From what I understand "Wicked pedia" can be edited by almost anyone as it is an open source reference.

So in therory if someone wanted to change history, reinvent themselves or just disinformation abuse it is all very plausable to do so.

Apperently it is frowned on though if you have been found tampering with your own reference about yourself.

I'd rarely if ever consult Wikipedia on political events /politicians - For the most part it's a farce in that regard. I don't like snopes either.

I have used it often to look up plots and info on movies, tv shows, etc or to do research on fictional characters for one reason or another. I have also read it for info on mythology and religion as well as stuff pertaining to my particular hobbies of anime, role playing games, horse back riding,etc. Those subjects are ones that I know a LOT about and so far I have yet to see false info in them.

I use it for biographies, names, dates of birth, place of birth, schools attended etc.
It's good for the basic stats.
I looked up Gen. George S. Patton the other day on it and it was pretty thourough.

I have a friend who is a medical student that studies by finding erronous wikipedia articles and correcting them. The scary part is not that a student is able to correct the articles, but that she finds so many wrong articles.

So, wiki is kind of the place you turn to when your Dad isn't around. You know, when you were a little kid and you asked, "Dad, how does an alarm clock work?" The answer he gave, is the same you will get from wiki [:D]

You have a very sensible approach, julia. 
Wikipedia is a starting point for gathering information,
not the end of the research process.
 
I do appreciate the fact that they will openly post
"The neutrality of this article is disputed"
and ask for more information to fill out a section.

Wikipedia is a useful reference source and the beauty of the concept is they encourage 'benefactors' to edit and update in order to build the database, yes its very good and a wonderful idea but like any form of research you do need to try to cross reference.

don't blame the info of one source blame the user if you fuck up on a test.

People can't write anything without providing a reference. I don't trust any information Wikipedia flags it as "citation needed". I do trust the rest.
