Will He Win for a fifth time in a row?

At 33 he is getting rather old for this kind of stuff. I know that someone once won the tour at a later age but that has only happened once.

I am a little surprised that he has decided to do it one more time. No one has ever won seven times and he was under a bit of pressure to step aside for some slightly younger riders who have been in his shadow all these years.

It could happen.

On the other hand, I think he has abandoned the U.S. Postal Service team which he has been riding with in the past. His new team is sponsored by the Discovery Channel and they may not work with him as well.

First -- Jack Nicklaus is the golfer; Jack Nicholson is the actor

Next: I am not aware of Armstrong being under any pressure to step aside for a younger rider. The only one I can think of might be Floyd Landis, and if he was really to replace Lance then I don't think they wouldn't have let Phonak hire him this year. Floyd will be worth watching in July, though, to see how he does when he's the main man.

And Lance didn't abandon US Postal -- they ended their sponsorship and Discovery replaced them. It is basically the same team as last year, except each year there are always some riders changing teams. But it isn't unusual for teams to change sponsors.

As for the question of whether or not Lance will win again -- I'll take my guess on that in June. It's too early to say because illness or a crash can have a big influence.

Brilliant question. Considering that we won his *sixth* in a row last year, yeah, I think the chances of him winning five in a row are pretty damn good. [sm=rolleyes.gif]

No one ever won six times before last year either, but I'm not really sure what that has to do with anything. He's arguably in the best shape of his life and has a great team built around him. He won more stages in the 2004 race (6) than he did in any previous year (4 was his previous best). Why should he step aside?

US Postal's original decision to sponsor the team was because they wanted to increase their visibility in the world market. Their attempt to gain more of a market share in the international shipping business failed and they chose to not continue sponsoring any TdF teams for 2005. It has nothing to do with their confidence in the team or Lance as a rider.

He still has the same team manager, trainer/nutritionist, crew and a considerable portion of the team he raced with last year. He'll just be wearing a white jersey instead of a blue one this year.

Okay, thanks! The talk I remember hearing during the last Tour was about Jan Ullrich (I think) who is a couple years younger and hasn't been able to win because Lance keeps on doing it. I think that is where the pressure was coming from for Lance to retire.

Great! This year's race should be really interesting.

I want a pony. Who do you think will get what they want first? [;)]

Seriously, I think last year was his best chance at a second TdF win and he blew it. His team disintegrated around him, he wasn't in peak form and he didn't have the heart to keep pace with Lance on the big climbs. Hell, he hasn't even worn the maillot jaune since 1998. Unless some drastic changes are made this year on the T-Mobile team and with his personal training regimen, he might have to settle for another bridesmaid position at best. I do hope he comes back in better form as it'll make for a much more interesting race.

Yes, I'm sure there is a lot of pressure from the other teams for Lance to retire [sm=lol.gif]

Re: Ullrich's training regimen -- just ran across an interesting quote about halfway down this page: "Speaking about starting the 2004 season too early, where, for the very first time, the 31 year-old finished outside the Tour podium in fourth place, the quietly-spoken German had only one thing to say: 'That mistake is not going to be made again.'"

In past years it hasn't been unusual at this time of the season for folks to comment about how fat and out of shape Ullrich is, though by July he seemed about ready to start the race and and his fitness appeared to peak during the race. Last year he seemed more serious early in the season and even won the Tour de Suisse in June, but his relatively poor 4th place finish in Paris implies he may have peaked too soon.

As for Lance, with age a racer's ability to recover from the day's efforts diminishes. He could look invincible again throughout most of the race but the cumulative efforts take their toll and then he could just crack on the last day in the mountains. However, if his team can give him an advantage of over a minute on everyone else in the team time trial again, that will give him a comfortable buffer to work with and put the pressure on his rivals; they could crack from aggressive riding just like Vinokourov did in '03.

That makes it fun to watch, eh?

He's an amazing athlete for sure, he competed (and won) the Tour de Georgia last year, and i saw him fly by my driveway (well a blur that i was "told" was him..LOL). He may have won, but an interesting fact is that he lost the leg of the race that took him up to Brasstown Bald (the highest peak in the state of GA, and the most brutal part of the ride) to an GA native!

happypervert -> RE: Will lance armstrong Win another Tour Defrance? (4/14/2005 11:41:11 AM)

Maybe you'll get to see him go by your driveway again because he's supposed to ride the TdG again this year. Starts on 4/19. Dunno if they changed the route.

Interesting that you mention him not winning the hard mountain stage, because I recall that he did win a stage there that had a sprint finish. That was a shock because before that Lance had been known as a poor sprinter, with jokes like he was the only person who could be beaten by Michael Boogard after finishing second (out of a two man break with Boogard) in the Amstel Gold race a few years ago. But then we saw him win a sprint again in the Tour de France when he finished a hard mountain stage with (as I recall) Ullrich, Floyd Landis, Basso, and another Telekom (Kloden?). Lance wanted to let Floyd get the glory, but the other Telekom took off and looked about to win the stage when Lance blew right by him for the win. That was pretty impressive.

Regarding the testing for performance enhancing compounds, Armstrong is arguably the most tested athlete on the planet. He has to make his whereabouts known 24 hours a day to the WADA and USDADA so they can find him to conduct unscheduled tests. He's been woken up at 6am by testers knocking on his front door for a urine sample. During competition, he's tested before and after every race. If after all of that he hasn't ever tested positive, there's one fairy obvious reason that comes to mind.

So how does he win? He's a freak, that's how.

Armstrong's heart is almost a third larger than the heart of an average man. At rest, it beats somewhere around thirty-two times a minute. If an average man went to his doctor wth a heart rate that low, they would be rushed to the hospital. His lung function is equally amazing. His VO2 Max (the measure of the lungs' maximum oxygen consumption during exercise) is among the highest ever recorded. His levels are about eighty-five millilitres per kilogram of body weight. Compare that to what your average healthy man might have, somewhere around forty.

On top of all of his freakish genetic superiority, he just plain works at it harder than anyone else. He's a machine.

happypervert -> RE: Will lance armstrong Win another Tour Defrance? (4/22/2005 10:12:44 AM)

I'll agree with everything that stef said with one exception -- I believe that a low heart rate is common among endurance athletes instead of being a measure of freakishness. I guess it is an adaptation by the body to that kind of training. Of course, there is an argument to be made that all world class endurance athletes are freaks; I could do an experiment and train to see if I can get my HR into the 30s, but I won't because I'm too lazy to do that.

Something I'll add is that a few years ago at this race in Philly I happened to sit on a barstool next to a medical student. Though Lance wasn't at this particular race, the student mentioned that they talked about Lance in one of his classes because he had an unusually high density of mitochondria in his cells; that would be an advantage for converting into energy all that oxygen his cardiovascular system is pumping around, and I guess it plays a part in the VO2 max. My knowledge of this area is foggy, but I understand that mitochondria can increase through training also; however, I suspect that there is an element of freakishness here too and that Lance probably started off with more mitochondria than normal and then increased it through training.

And beyond all the normal doping controls, Lance has also been hounded by scandal journalists hoping to make a buck by playing "gotcha!" All they've been able to do has been to make sensational charges without proving anything, unless you count vague and uncorroborated claims by disgruntled former employees as "proof". The latest charges of steroid use are just ridiculous, as anyone can see by looking at the difference between a burly steroid bloated baseball player and a scrawny bike racer. Besides, the most useful dope for bike racers is EPO or others like it which raise the blood's ability to carry oxygen. For the record, Lance has used EPO, but that was when he was on chemotherapy and then he was the type of patient EPO was designed to treat.

As an aside, I'll bet folks around here thought he was a freak when he was 15 and finished 4th in the local triathlon. And if Lance hadn't won all these TdFs, then all the suspicion would fall on Ullrich.
