I'll agree with everything that stef said with one exception -- I believe that a low heart rate is common among endurance athletes instead of being a measure of freakishness. I guess it is an adaptation by the body to that kind of training. Of course, there is an argument to be made that all world class endurance athletes are freaks; I could do an experiment and train to see if I can get my HR into the 30s, but I won't because I'm too lazy to do that. Something I'll add is that a few years ago at this race in Philly I happened to sit on a barstool next to a medical student. Though Lance wasn't at this particular race, the student mentioned that they talked about Lance in one of his classes because he had an unusually high density of mitochondria in his cells; that would be an advantage for converting into energy all that oxygen his cardiovascular system is pumping around, and I guess it plays a part in the VO2 max. My knowledge of this area is foggy, but I understand that mitochondria can increase through training also; however, I suspect that there is an element of freakishness here too and that Lance probably started off with more mitochondria than normal and then increased it through training. And beyond all the normal doping controls, Lance has also been hounded by scandal journalists hoping to make a buck by playing "gotcha!" All they've been able to do has been to make sensational charges without proving anything, unless you count vague and uncorroborated claims by disgruntled former employees as "proof". The latest charges of steroid use are just ridiculous, as anyone can see by looking at the difference between a burly steroid bloated baseball player and a scrawny bike racer. Besides, the most useful dope for bike racers is EPO or others like it which raise the blood's ability to carry oxygen. For the record, Lance has used EPO, but that was when he was on chemotherapy and then he was the type of patient EPO was designed to treat. As an aside, I'll bet folks around here thought he was a freak when he was 15 and finished 4th in the local triathlon. And if Lance hadn't won all these TdFs, then all the suspicion would fall on Ullrich.
