" LARGO, Florida (AP) -- City commissioners early Saturday made final the firing of a city manager who is seeking a sex-change operation, despite pleas from dozens of impassioned supporters to save his job.

After a six-hour hearing, the commissioners decided to fire 48-year-old Steve Stanton after his announcement that he planned a new life as a woman. The move came after the commission voted 5-2 last month to suspend him with pay. "

I live in Jacksonville so we have been hearing about it.  The sad thing is that when he announced his plans in a new conference, he had not even told his son, and it broke up his family.  To me, it is a very selfish thing for him to have done this, personally and publicly.

I do not think that his having a sex change should have any effect on his job performance whatsoever. I do not think this person should be fired just because he chooses to live his life as he desires/needs too. It's a shame that we live in such a prejudice world.

I live about 100-120 miles south of Largo and I was watching this on TV.  There was a insurance agent working for Prudential who also pled for his case.  This agent also changed identity from being male to female and stated there was no problem with this issue and that she is still working for the company.

As far as a possible discrimination lawsuit is concerned, the former city manager may not possibly have a leg to stand on this case, considering the stipulation in his contract stated he can be fired without any cause at any time (when working for this state, contracts do have a way for siding with employers). However, this case might go forward to the Florida Supreme Court concerning transgender issues in the workplace.

When I worked for a prison system, there was someone in the classification department who showed his desire to have a sex change.  I found out later that not only was he hassled by his fellow co-workers but with the correctional officers and inmates as well.  The superintendant told his individual he could have his operation, but he will need to be transferred elsewhere. 

I also feel if the person is doing a satisfactory job, then changing sexes should not be an issue....it will be interesting to see how this case will develop.

Anyone who would think this obviously knows very little about transsexuals. They would also not taken into account the full story & are making a judgemental statement based on personal bias . I've read all the details of how this individual had every intension of coming out to her family but was pressured into having this public conference because a reporter contacted her & told her they planned to out her the very next day in the St.Petersburg Times.

This story had to have been leaked by someone on the very staff she had to speak to about her intent to move forward with her transition in the near future. (this is what a person has to do when addressing their employers about pretty much anything, you talk to HR) The reporter contacted her & basically said I'm running this story tomorrow whether you care to confirm or deny the content.

Steve's son was going to be heading to college soon & at that time the matter of coming out would take place... in a timely manner with assistence of professionals (therapists) if necessary & once the son was out of the area & out of center stage Steve planned to come out to the rest of the world.

Who's the home wrecker here... the individual who planned to handle this in a manner that would have considered all involved or the individuals who outed her?

Selfish is not the attitude of the transsexual who has to live in the wrong gender... not unless one would consider the act of living a selfish.

Thank you for sharing this information, Mistress Passion.
I have been wondering about the behind-closed-doors-going-ons
in this situation.  Damned shame that she was forced to make a public
announcement or be outed by the press.

Actually, on the contrary, I used to live in South Beach and had/have friends that either had the surgery or are in the process of having it.  There is no personal bias here.

The fact that the reporter "forced" the news conference has no relevance in this case or on my opinion.

Steve's son is 13, not 18, which ever way he would have come out, it's completely wrong and could damage this poor childs mental health.

Which brings me to my point.  The home wrecker here, is Mr. Stanton, who decided to pursue the sex change.  I am not disputing the possible feeling of living in the wrong gender here.  See, Mr. Stanton is married and has a 13 year old child, he is not a SINGLE man.  How dare he break up his marriage and family, all for his own selfishness.  He could have at least waited till his son was at college, but then what about his wife??? Put yourself in HER shoes!  He got married, that was his choice, he needs to honor that. 
That is why I understand the firing of him, he was dishonest with his family and his community.  He was making plans behind everyone's backs, I would not trust someone with a government job either in this situation.  If he was SINGLE, with no children, different story!! I actually contacted 2 of my SINGLE friends who have gone through surgery and they agree with me, he was selfish in not thinking of his family, and what it would do to them.  Sometimes we all have to make sacrifices for our family, even if it means not fulfilling our dreams or goals, this is a part of living life.

Crikey.

Well, I got married and I have two kids, and I changed gender. It just happened, and its difficult to explain - its not that I wasnt a willing participant, but more like I wasnt really there - it was someone else and I was watching from the sidelines. I dont regret any of it, apart from the hurt I eventually caused to my best friend in this world.

So, I'm homewrecking scum right?

Well, maybe if you think that way. But I'm pretty sure its better for my ex and my kids that daddy is a girl now, and still providing all the financial and emotional support they need, than for daddy to have killed himself five years ago. What do you reckon?

If I'd been selfish about it, I'd have killed myself you know? After all, it was me suffering and me to suffer more, whether I stayed the same or changed as I saw it back then. As it was and is, I've been incredibly lucky though. It isnt so for many.

Children are of course at the heart of the anguish over a parent changing gender - it did indeed worry me a lot, how it would affect my kids, and it still does. But here's the thing - they seem to take their lead from others on matters like this, and with my family and my ex being accepting, so are they. They are growing up in a strange situation of course, but they do have two parents, which is more than many of their peers can say. The only concern now is over bullying from some possibly less enlightened kids who have gained their less than favourable outlook from unenlightened parents and family, but so far so good. 

I could ramble on and on about this, but my point is that it is all in how this stuff is handled, not the nature of the situation itself. In the Stanton case, it appears to have been badly handled by way of others' unwarranted intrusion and it is therefore to them we must look for any fault in this case.

What about her?   From what I understand of the situation she was supporting his choice, to the point they had a plan in place to tell their child, including protecting him from the given media attention that would come when it was time for Stanton to begin his very public transition. 

For a start, You assume much about another person's child.  You don't know his child's capacity to deal with the information nor do you know that his child isn't a confident young man already comfortably developing within his identity, mature and willingly supportive of his father's decision, and his need for it. 

You say parenthood is a sacrifice, even if it means not fullfilling dreams or goals?  I don't think many would disagree with you... but it's not like Stanton grew up wanting to be an astronaut, or the Skipper off Giligan's Island, or even Bridgette Bardot's rawhide bikini ... or captaining his own pirate ship and sailing the high seas ... I don't think Stanton is being selfish at all and I hope he has the opportunity to have his day in heels.
