Dog Performs 'Heimlich' on Choking Owner

Tuesday, March 27, 2007
CALVERT, Md. - Toby, a 2-year-old golden retriever, saw his owner choking on a piece of fruit and began jumping up and down on the woman's chest. The dog's owner believes the dog was trying to perform the Heimlich maneuver and saved her life.
Debbie Parkhurst, 45, of Calvert told the Cecil Whig she was eating an apple at her home Friday when a piece lodged in her throat. She attempted to perform the Heimlich maneuver on herself but it didn't work. After she began beating on her chest, she said Toby noticed and got involved.
"The next think I know, Toby's up on his hind feet and he's got his front paws on my shoulders," she recalled. "He pushed me to the ground, and once I was on my back, he began jumping up and down on my chest."
That's when the apple dislodged and Toby started licking her face to keep her from passing out, she said.
"I literally have pawprint-shaped bruises on my chest. I'm still a little hoarse, but otherwise, I'm OK," Parkhurst said.
"The doctor said I probably wouldnt be here without Toby," said Parkhurst, a jewelry artist. "I keep looking at him and saying 'Youre amazing.'"

I dislocated a toe a few years ago, on a morning when I was due to go to the village fete. Just thought it was badly bruised so didn't go to hospital. Well After faving limped round the fate for 20 minutes, I was speaking to someone, when my mother's dog sat on my injured foot, causing me to scream. Was not limping so much afterwards, as my toe was back in place. After that we used to joke that the dog was Doctor Bronx

That story is in my local paper. We all discussed it at work. We wondered if the dog thought she was playing and jumped on her and forced the food out by accident. She has bruises from the dog jumping on her.

Dogs are smarter then we think, if only they could talk. I take mine for a 2 mile hike every Sat. and Sun. He leaves me alone Mon. thru Fri., but he knows when it is Sat. and Sun. because he nags and follows me around until we go for the hike.

What a wonderful and amazing story.
I love dogs. My dogs own are simply great. Slightly spoiled, but they're my babies and deserve all of the attention they get, IMO. I think dogs rock! Mine are smart - I think dogs in general are a lot smarter than some people give them credit for being.

My dog is 15 years old and still loves to hike. I am lucky he is in good health. Another recent dog story in our local paper is a lady was walking her dog and the dog stuck its head in a trap and died. It happened so fast she said, he trap was in weeds and had a can of food, and the dog got caught in it and she did not have the strenth to release the trap. The trap was not allowed where it was, it was a poachers trap.

Perhaps dogs will some day be saving people from a whole lot more than suffocation:
