I'm guessing this topic might have been addressed, so please excuse a newbie. We recently got an adjustable spreader bar and so far the reality hasn't lived up to our imaginations. It really doens't provide as much tension as just restraints. Are we missing something or is that all we can expect?

Thanks

there are many styles of spreaders on the open market place couple and sadly most are a real disappointment ....especially when people are looking for a certain tension ....perhaps leaving a pic here as to the ones you have I might be able to suggest mods for them..

If I am understanding this correctly.  For me I really dont use spreader bars to provide much tention... I am into suspention bondage so for me all the tention is in the other ropes and the spreader bar is just use to spread her legs or goes under her knees to hold her legs up and spread when she is curled up in a ball about 4' off the ground.

Personally, I've found that anything adjustable is only going to restrain within certain limits. The one I have is too small for my liking, but I have yet to really put forth the effort in building a better one for myself yet. one of the great things about buying things and being handy is the ability to modify thigns to suit your needs. show us whatcha got, and perhaps some of the craftier folks like myself and Alloces can make suggestions.

Also, check out Foxy Furniture out of Austin, TX for some really nice vanilla-wannabe kinky items (Disguiseable) they have some nice stuff there, including an adjustable spreader bar.

Given that it's dirt cheap to build your own spreader bars out of doweling and eye hooks, I wouldn't bother buying one that was adjustable.

Well, we already bought one and just trying to make the most of it. The dowel and eye hooks will come in handy to make a longer one someday. I think for right now we will stick to leather and metal restraints. You might be a neighbor.

Is there somewhere I could get the design to make one as they are very hard to get where I am (I think they may be illegal to sell)

If there is somewhere i could get the design for an adjustable one that would be great

Thanks

Making one that is adjustable is a little tougher.  You could go to HomeDepot type place and purchase a telescoping paint handle and drill it on the ends to add the connectors.

The poster mentioned "newbie", so i would like to mention something on spreaders. A large amount , well most, weren't designed for suspension. So if your end desire is suspension with them, make sure they can support the weight desired.
For my bondage frame, i made a few different lengths from 3/4 inch black iron pipe. Precut and threaded pipe is available at places like home depot etc. Then just buy end caps, drill a hole in the end caps for the eye bolts .

Someone mentioned making wood ones, those are great also since you can stain them what ever color you wish.

Another variation , since i like shiney things, was i made a set  of 4 from 3/4 inch copper. i bought some 3/4 inch cooper tubing and  end caps. Drilled holes in the end caps for the eye bolts , used self locking nuts and tightened the eyebolt, then soldered the assembled eye caps on the various lengths.
You can see them here
http://www.slavechris.com/spreader/spreader.html

to see the black iron one on the frame , there should be an image on
http://www.slavechris.com/Playroom/Playroom.html
Second image in, shows the spreader i made foe suspension.

Irishm57... Great work!
I never even thought of using copper and definatly has a unique smooth look to it.
I will definatly have to look into making some.
