Who said anything about a war?...just a bomb.  Hardly anyone batted an eyelash when Israel did it.  Hey, maybe they should be the ones to do it again since it worked so well for them.

My guess is that Iran would not sit back and take it. Their president is a little unhinged too you know according to the media. Now with repsect i know you come from a military background where the thinking is 'bomb them, shoot them etc etc' but i personally think diplomacy might just be the first option to look at here rather than going in all guns blazing as the USA does.

(Well, there is this little thing about Russia and Putin having a 60 billion dollar GNP in 2001 and having a 273 billion dollar GNP today due to oil {5 years later....almost a 555% increase...while our GNP has grown about 28%...but hey...no big} it's all good).

WARNING: Military solution ahead.  Back when I was young Iraq built a nuclear reactor and the Israeli government took offense to it.  They simply flew a flight of F-16's over the border and blew the hell out of it with a few thousand pounds of bombs....problem solved.  Same situation here.  Except someone else needs to do it because the world is already too pissed at the US as it is.

I've wondered actually whether Britain would/should do a bombing strike once the hostages are home safely. A reminder, to the world as well as Iran, that there's a cost for messing with UK citizens.

Yes he is a little nutty.  Ok, maybe we'll try this crazy diplomacy thing lol.  No, shooting is not my first reaction(I'm actually in school for psychology now to be a therapist....now that is doing a 180) but as of yet diplomacy has not stopped Iran from building the reactor or stopping they're reasearch.  All I'm saying is that something more aggressive at this juncture may be needed.

I very much doubt Britain will lol. I also very much doubt they should. A cost for messing with british citizens, now thats just funny.

You are possibly quite right but we tried threatening them and they went ahead and built the station anyway. Turns out we made an empty threat too.
The problem lies in that we do not have the ability at present to win a war with them on our own. I seriously have my doubts too whether Bush would back Blair up if he chose to take military action. Whether that would be because he wouldnt want to or because he hasnt got the military ability at present is a matter of opinion.

Diplomacy didn't work with Iran 25 years ago when they took 50 + hostages from our embassy when the great Jimmy Carter was President. They were released the very day that Ronald Reagan was sworn in .

Never thought I'd say this, but there were moments during all this that I found myself missing Margaret Thatcher!

missturbation -> RE: "Iran president to free UK sailors" (4/4/2007 7:14:33 PM)

Well diplomacy appears to have worked for us getting our 15 back today.

lol, that's because the diplomacy was done by the great Jimmy Carter...nobody took him seriously.  From what Miss T is saying he was the Blair of the US.

servantforuse -> RE: "Iran president to free UK sailors" (4/4/2007 7:15:39 PM)

The threat of what would happen got those sailors back.

Why what would happen? Come on we arent capable of war at present and Iran knows that. Besides it would only be taken as yet another empty threat by us.

Let's be fair to President Carter. He actually did attempt a military strike, didn't he?

HydroMaster -> RE: "Iran president to free UK sailors" (4/4/2007 7:17:48 PM)

They said Syria actually had a big part in the decision.  So I'm wondering what they said to Iran to push for the release.

HydroMaster -> RE: "Iran president to free UK sailors" (4/4/2007 7:19:36 PM)

I can't remember for sure.  I think there was a rescue attempt made but it was aborted or something.

Syria played a part in the release today?
Where did you hear that?

HydroMaster -> RE: "Iran president to free UK sailors" (4/4/2007 7:25:20 PM)

It was on the marine corp news.  They said that Syria had sent in their diplomats and they had played a major part in them. There were no specifics though

missturbation -> RE: "Iran president to free UK sailors" (4/4/2007 7:28:29 PM)

Curious, i watched an extended news special thingy on it tonight and it wasn't mentioned. The only thing they said was that diplomatic talks had been held between Britain and Iran.

HydroMaster -> RE: "Iran president to free UK sailors" (4/4/2007 7:33:44 PM)

Now you see why I'm so critical of the media...you get conflicting stories all the time.  I think I heard there was even another middle east country involved but I can't remember which...maybe Jordan?
