This was an interesting brochure I received in my email box this morning.

Abduction Precautions for Women
We can now add to the list of victims the retired 77 yr. old TCU professor from Ft Worth whose body was found last week in Oklahoma--and the 11 yr.old in Sarasota, FL Because of these recent abductions in daylight hours, refresh yourself of these things to do in an emergency situation...This is for you, and for you to share with your wife, your
children, everyone you know. After reading this, forward it to someone you care about. It never hurts to be careful in this crazy world we live in.

1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!
2.Learned this from a tourist guide in New Orleans. If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you....chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

3.If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives.

4.Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS!) The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.

5.A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
A.)Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat.
B.)If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
C.)Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)

6.ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot).
7.If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN!
8.As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP. It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked "for help" into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.
9.Another Safety Point: Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird. The police told her "Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, "We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded, and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby. He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby crying outside their doors, when they're home alone at night.
The Crying Baby theory was mentioned on America's Most Wanted this past Saturday when they profiled the serial killer in Louisiana.

The elavator instead of the stairs could be just as dangerous. He or she would have perfect privacy the doors would absorb and deaden the screams and there's no chance someone is just going to accidedently interupt you as they could on stair wells. Also the elevators enclosed an he can hit the stop button. on a stair well you could MAYBE at least try an push him down stairs. you're not traped in a lil box.

I have to agree on the elevator with Feline Persuasion. When I was a teenager and worked in a hospital over the summers. The elevators would break down daily. Sometimes locking us inside for hours on end.
We could have done almost anything we wanted while stuck. The emergency stop button when hit does not sound the siren in most cases. It merely stops the elevator and nobody outside is the wiser. Other than thinking the elevator is taking it's sweet time to get to you.

agree on the elevator

Gloria,
I didn't agree with that one either. Maybe they are thinking about the newer elevators that come camera equipped, but I always thought the stairs a better option versus the elevator in my NYC building. Even if I wasn't going to be assaulted, I'd be concerned about being stuck in the damn thing all night.

You have any statistics on that one? I would not take odds on the guy with the gun missing me under 20 yards.

That is not the only way that a woman can be abducted. She can be lured by a selfproclaimed Dom that he doesn't believe that she is willing to do all that is necessary to please him and as she falls under his spell more and more he ends up convincing her to travel to a foreign land and then she is doomed. She may think it is the only way to please a Dom but they need to take a few breaths and don't jump into something that final.

Ugh.. this whole post just feeds my natural paranoia.

These are all things I do daily, naturallly. Esp. the van thing. Ever since I was in middle school, I have been terrified of vans. Especially those big white unmarked cargo vans. Every time I saw one I would cringe.

One thing on this idea that wasn't mentioned is make sure you park near a light. Looking in your backseat in the dark can be hard without light. If a light isn't available normally where you park, carry a small flashlight on your key chain. (Flashlight also can help blind an attacker if you can shine it in their eyes)

Also keep watch for an attacker under your car, watch from a distance away to watch out. When I lived in NE, there was a gang that would slash a woman's achilles from under the car as she got in the car rendering her foot useless. Then they would attack.

When leaving a place have your keys already out and handy. Many attackers will strike while you're fumbling to get into your car. If you have several keys on your keychain place them between your fingers, that way if you have to throw a punch you will cause more damage and the attacker will be more easy to spot for police later.

Only "clicker" unlock your car when you are at your car, not from a ways away. Try to time it so it unlocks just as you open your car door. This reduces the chance of an attacker getting into your car before you can see him.

I think it depends on the stairs and if you know the building. I won't be alone in the elevator with someone else that I don't know. When I see them get on, I will get off and enter again only when it is a group of people or empty.

Some stair wells tend to spook me, especially if a light is out somewhere.

If you feel they genuinely need help. If at a store, offer to go get one of the employees to help. Or a building security guard etc.

Be smart. Be aware. Be safe. As when driving, you have to be aware at all times where all the other cars are on the road. Same with people. Keep watch.

Not only that, unless you have some sort of illness the stairs are usually faster anyway.
Especially when time is of the essence.

Hi lil1v,

You can put one fear to rest at least. The Achilles heel thing's been debunked as a urban myth: http://www.snopes.com/horrors/robbery/slasher.asp .

Hi lil1v,

You can put one fear to rest at least. The Achilles heel thing's been debunked as a urban myth: http://www.snopes.com/horrors/robbery/slasher.asp . Just wish I'd known that earlier - I heard the myth about my local mall in the south when I was 10 and it's left me with a lifelong dread of parking garages.

Liana

*laughs* Oh my.. I don't even want to get started on my fears of parking garages. Parking garages are only slightly less scary than swimming in water with fish in it.

*currently pondering if she needs to maybe seek therapy*

Now I know that smokers are not the most popular people right now, but a policeman once told me that when walking alone it's a good idea (if you smoke) to keep a cigarette lit... he said that surprisingly enough a red hot cherry on the end of it tends to deter attackers, not only does it hurt like hell, but it leaves a lovely scar.

And as morbid as it is... should you get attacked, do your best to scratch the attacker, the skin under your nails is DNA.

Show confidence... maintain eye contact and look as menacing as possible.
During a time that we had a sexual predator wandering my city,I was approached by a guy asking for a light.... I was smoking at the time.He looked "odd" and I felt weird so I looked him right in the eye and said... "I don't smoke" It took him completely off guard and I managed to get away and get someones attention before he figured out what was happening. The cops got him, and it turns out he had brutally raped two women before "picking" me.
Later I was told the best thing I could have done was to get him off guard the way I did.
