Ok so a friend of mine just bought a hot glue gun, and being the sadist that she is, she wants to hose someone with it..LOL! So i told her i'd ask all of you fine people what the risks could be if any other than burns of course. [:@]

They not only burn, they can rip your skin off.

Oh, this really isnt a good idea!.
Hot melt adhesive will not only burn, but it also has a tendancy to remove the skin and flesh under the burn, with near surgical precision.
Now, I'm sure this sounds like great fun to a certian subset out there, but here are some things to consider...
1, Its gonna hurt, A LOT. Its not like hot wax amped up, its traumatic second and third degree burns.
2, The chance of infection is pretty high, even with decent first aid/aftercare, because it causes an open wound, not a typical burn.
3, because of the tissue loss, this type of burn leaves horrible, knotted, ugly scars.

Just food for thought.You would have to be a True Sadist (and nearly a criminal one, IMO) to do this to someone.
Of course, consent throws a spin into all this, but I really dont think anyone can consent to this till they see the damage it can do.

And no, I dont know this frome a scene gone bad, Ive witnessed these injuries first hand in industrial settings, as a safety officer/first responder.

Do you know if it's a high temp or low temp gun? The low temp little guns for crafting are not that bad. Children as young as 6 use them in girl scouts and my daughter (now a teen) thinks they are fun to play with on her hands. I'd still stay away from any sensitive areas. Not recommending this as a bdsm activity, i can think of alot more fun things to do instead

While I wouldn't recommend "hosing" anyone with the hot glue gun, I have burnt myself many times with the small craft type ones (as mentioned above) and had no ill effect. I would say that using the low temp ones in very small squirts on most places other than the genitals would probably be fairly safe. But if your friend really wants to play with glue, here's an idea. Get some plain old elmer's glue and find a guy or girl who is fairly shave but with enough stubble to be significant. Squeeze and spread a thick layer of the glue over any part of his or her body and allow to dry. Then begin to peel. It's really amazing what can happen.

I agree, low temp guns are fairly safe.  It is not really glue, but just hot plastic (what really burns is the metal tip of the gun).  I don't think is hotter than candle wax or the parafine treatments that we give to old people with arthritis. Put some lotion beforehand on your skin and try to squirt some on a thick layer of skin, like the plam of your hand, then on the top of your hand, later on you can try on thinner skin like your abdomen.  Remember the lotion first!  Avoid genitals, orifices like the urethra, rectal mucosa, eyes, you know, places where it sure will hurt and damage.

For people into sticky play (and they are more common than people think) this can be a great play.  I as well caution to be careful and avoid sensitive areas and areas with hair, but in general, no reason you can't play around with it a bit.  I remember in arts classes having it on my fingers and playing with it a bit. 

But it can be dangerous and can be very bad.

I've got a lovely little scar (recently acquired) from putting my hand down on the tip of a hot glue gun. I would suggest using it much like wax drip candles and holding the gun up high to let it cool a bit before it reaches the submissive.

I think the best way for her to be sure that this will deliver the effect she wants to give, and not do injury, is for her to test it upon herself first, upon the same area of body she might use it upon another. Then, if no harm is done, she can feel secure in using it on her partner, I think. And if she is not willing to do this on herself......then why in heck would she even consider experimenting with someone else?

I still think its a bad way to play.
There are much safer alternatives if you want to play with hot viscious fluids.

Get a waxing kit, if you want the hot/sticky combo.
Nuke some KY jelly.
Or, ya know, plain old candles work.

Molten plastic (ie, "just hot plastic") is an evil bitch, if you are unconvinced, just visit a burn ward.

devout, maybe you're thinking of something else, but craft glue guns, while they do burn, the glue's not  typically dangerous. I've burnt myself a few times on my craft gun, and none of the serious things you've said might happen did.

Having removed skin with a a hot glue gun (not industrial or the teeny crafting ones, but a typical home unit), i'm with you on all of the above. Not a good choice for an improvised toy.

I've seriously burnt myself with your normal "low temp glue guns."  You CAN seriously harm yourself with them.  Just because some people have managed to use them and not get seriously burned from them doesn't mean thats the only possibility.

I learned this the hard when I was building a wreath for a floral design contest.  I ended up with large second degree burns covering the entire tip and pad of three fingers.  I'll have to see if I can find the pictures.

I supose you could do it safely, yes.... if you took at least the same safety precautions you'd use with candle wax and steped them up.  You would definetly need a significant distance between the tip and the person.  Low temp glue guns heat up to about 250 degrees, the boiling point for water is 212 degrees.  Keep that in mind.

I'm sure I have more experience with Hot Glue than anyone on here. (the entire costume shown in my photos is crafted from head to toe in hot glue)  No glue that I have ever encountered is safe for skin contact. Even the smallest lowest temp guns are beyond the temprature needed to blister the skin. DO NOT do this.  The major difference in Hot Glue and Wax is the cool down time. Wax cools at a much faster rate, the glue however sets much slower and holds a greater amount of heat for a longer period of time which can easily blister the skin. Also glue guns do not have temprature regulators on them. They jsut start heating and keep heating untill turned off, reaching tempratures well above the melting point of the glue itself. If you let one set for too long and it reached peak tempratures you could cause very serious damage to someone.

WOW everyone... thanks for all the respones. Some of you say it's ok with a low temp gun and some of you say to steer clear of them. i will let my friend know to watch the heavy finger should she decide to pay with the gun and keep and really ice cold wet rag near..lol! [8D]

being a welder I do play with extremely hot things on a daily basis and and I always get these ideas while in the dark under My welding hood...not that I am ever going to act on them but damn a hot glue gun..here I have an extra bit of silvadine ointment here cause I do fear that it will be needed........and NO you cannot borrow My cutting torch...

Im a crafty lady  I own several hot melt guns....there is the hot melt one that can and will cause blistering fromt he molten plastic (i have actually when crafting left the hot glue in place since i already had the burn and the protection form the cooled lava like glue...

I have the low temp ones as well Mine cost well over $50 it was no $2.99 kmart special one.  and i have quite a nice linear scar on my forarm fromt hat  the webbing along from these darn things can burn...

I have dealt with the injuries i sustained and well I soooo wouldnt recommmend inflicting that kind of damage in somoene....unless you also like to play with curling irons. and hot branding pokers....I would put them all in the same catagories  HARD CORE....do as you will just my 2 cents worth

To sum it up in so many words. I accidentally dripped some on me long time ago in a shop class.  It left nice third degree burns.  It pretty much is like napalm.  The molten plastic sits there and burns and burns and burns and eats flesh down to the bone if it is a bad burn. 

May I suggest a slightly less umm permanent means of getting your kinks in using things like candle wax and all as others have suggested?  Unless you really want to put someone in a burn center...

So, what are the differences between craft guns costing 50 bucks and the 2 buck craft gun. Aside from price of course.
