This is kind of an adjunct to the "Walmart" thread.
Justheather said we are a nation of "consumers" and that's just what the big companies want.
I don't buy a lot of junk myself.
That's not to say that my condo is bare or anything just that I only buy what I "need."
Also, I'm a saver, I try to bank money each month.
Some months I can't do it but over the course of a year I manage to save about $500-$600 per month.
I could probably do better if I stopped buying lottery tickets, I spend about $150 per week on them.
Two days ago I hit a scratch ticket which I don't buy that often for $250 and a few months ago I hit a "Cash Five" ticket for $1,200, one more number and I would have won $400,000!
I'd rather spend money on lottery tickets than on junk from stores that I don't need. At least when I lose I know that the money goes to the schools and I don't have a house full of plastic junk from China.
I was brought up to save money every week from my (very) meager allowance.
I think that it's important to teach kids to save their money.
It gives them good habits for the rest of their lives. I don't know if I ever would have become responsible about money without good saving habits in my youth.
I'm planning a trip for next year (July 2008) to Sweden, Denmark and Ireland which I couldn't do if I wasn't able to save.
I'd much rather do something like that than blow money buying "stuff" from a big box store.
How about you, are you a "saver?'

WE spend "alot" of money but not on junk our horses get a bunch however we do have a saving program.A certain amount deposited in the savings and I have gotten into a habit of throwing loose change 5 nd 10 bills in a jar ..YOU would be surprised how much you can save by doing this...AS an experiment try tossing your loose change and 1$ bills into a jar for a month the at the end check it out...ITS a good way to start a small saving program...bounty

I have bank accounts scattered all over. Generally opening a new account for each new idea I come up with.
So, yes I try to save. However if I really want something I will do the research and get the best price I can. It
may actually take me a couple of years before I will make the purchase.
I do better some weeks than others. Overall, I've saved a good chunk of cash in my life so far.

i make the rounds at thrift stores. i trade, even have dumpster dived.

i am a tightwad. some items i will pay for convenience. others im tightwad of the century.

moving after 8 yrs i found stuff that i did know i had.

Bountyhunter, yeah, I do that too.
I've got $1,000 in $1 bills in a 2 lbs coffee can that I've saved over the last year and almost 2 of them filled with mixed change, pennies, nickols, dimes, quarters.
I empty the change out of my pockets every night and toss it in a can.
I'm sure that all those Walmart type stores wouldn't want to hear of people saving money like that.
They want people "consuming" not saving.

Dude...$150.00 a month?...I know you are aware you have a beter chance of getting struck by lightening than winning the lottery...I save but I do spend on my hobbies and I am a huge believer in purchasing quality over crap.

popeye I would think that since most of your $150.00 a week does not come back to you..( in winnings) How cool would it be if you did "bank it" and then at the end of the year you went to your local C.C. or University and found a deserving student(s) that you could donate the money to help keep them in school...Ths way you would actually have the pleasure of meeting and know directly that you had personally made a huge difference in their lives....Might get a friend for life out of the deal....How cool would that be?

I try to do both. Have a good plan AND keep a chunk for fun. Long term goals are great, but life really is too short to spend most of it waiting for the next big thing.

That being said, I'm the queen of finding cheap/free fun stuff to do and can enjoy window shopping.

HEY nothing Wrong with Dumpster hopping,thrift stores and we barter alot since I am a long hair mother earth type..Barter services trade for what ever you want seems to work around here among the Amish and mentonites..even with us long hair friendly "English" they will barter and trade...Just a view by this ol" long hair master...bounty

I don't really save in the regular sense. My biggest concern is getting and staying debt free.

I do keep change in coffee cans and have other rainyday funds. But, there's a lot of precipitation in my life, so I don't count on it as savings. Its just-in- case something else bad happens money.

I'm pretty tight when it comes to consumption. You can't spend what you don't have once you swear off credit cards.

I've got the opposite problem- I need cards so I can build a good credit history to get some of the other things I want in life.

Great thread! I am a saver but I am more in that category of keeping
my credit, good and clean!
I am going to be applying for a mortgage soon, so I am doing everything I can
to keep my record, clean.
Which means I am being very, very good and careful.
Thank goodness for stores that allow me to save money, like WalMart.

Hi Popeye and E/everyone,

I prioritize what items to purchase as name brand and what items
to get as house brands or generics. Quite a few items are fine as
house brands; many frozen, boxed and canned items. Same for
medication and toiletries in most cases.

Some things I wait until they go on sale; coats, jackets, athletic
shoes and Birkenstocks. I have back and leg injuries and cannot
wear cheap, flimsy shoes, the result would be spending the entire
day in pain. Jackets and coats are big ticket items and the after
season sales on the Net are the best! I usually get those for
1/3 or 1/2 off. Same for White Sales at major department stores,
get your quality bedding, towels and kitchen items.

Gambling is of very little interest to me. I have never bought a lotto ticket
but will play a few slot machines if in Reno or Las Vegas.
I would rather play nickle and dime card games with friends
or use different colored M&M's. lol

Money is a tool, finding the right balance between enjoying life
and saving for the future is the key.

Oh, Vendaval, the things I do to save money are similar.
I also can't wear cheap/inexpensive shoes because of my feet,
but I manage to wait and get good shoes on sale.
If it is NOT on sale, I rarely buy it.
Also, even when I go to WalMart , I use coupons, so I do save a lot
of money on household goods. I often get detergent for about $2.
I love to save money, its a good thing to keep it in my pocket and in the bank!
I agree money is a tool and it is wise to be a good steward of your money.
Currently, I am trying to maintain TWO single family homes on my income, so
yeah I try to save as much as I can.

I want to add it is important to set your own personal financial goals and stick to them!
Don't be a victim of peer pressure or keeping up with the Joneses.
When all is said and done, you are a responsible for your money and your financial choices.
We live in a society of instant gratification and being able to save in order to accomplish your
dreams, is a sign of maturity.

Pretty good tips and ideas people! My financial house is in order and I like it that way. Was broke with nothing too many times to take money for granted like so many do. Things change and sometimes they change fast so I try and sock away some for security just in case.....

It appears that we have similiar approachs to the "green frog
skins", Mz. Mia.

Why try to keep up with people who always have to have the
latest and most expensive material items? That gives them
power over you and accomplishes nothing but emptying your
wallet. I keep my little economy car, have it serviced by my
long time mechanics, and keep it running smoothly. I have
no need to have something flashy and expensive.
