FelinePersuasion -> How long will it take for a new steroid pill for hives to control itching? (4/14/2007 12:25:09 AM)

so the itching and the hives got worse, they were spreading and hurting, and the dr prescribed an oral steroid. I have to take 2 in the morning 2 after lunch and supper, and two at bedtime. I don't know if I can take or put anything else on my body with this, but it''s extreamly important the itching stop with in 20 minutes or so of taking it.  I have to be out with animal control teens tomorow, and I can't do my job if I am ocd'ing about the itching and in pain.

Feline you should start noticing considerable relief by the time you have finished the first day of oral steroids.  Unless your doctor has told you something different you can also take an antihistamine such as benadryl for itch relief.

Hope this all clears up soon!  It has got to be madding.

Should start working quickly as DommeChains said. I still would suggest you get some Sarna Lotion. Since it's topical, it starts giving relief right away. Yes, you can take Benedryl also, and you probably won't get sleepy or woozy like you did before. Again, if the benedryl isn't working call the MD and get Atarax or Seldane. You may need a stronger antihistamine..

...fast reply

If you were prescribed Prednisone as your oral steroid, be careful with it's use.  It can bring about adult diabetes.

Since I am allergic to Benedryl, Prednisone is my only option (or injected steroids).  Prednisone usually starts working after a day or two, but, I also take Atarax with it when needed.  The Atarax calms the nerves, which helps the hives and itchiness to go away much quicker, usually within 20 minutes of taking it.

If the oral steroid hasn't taken affect quickly enough, ask your doctor to prescribe a low dose of Atarax or something similar to help reduce the itching.

Good luck, I am all to familiar with hives and itchiness.

YES! It's extreamly maddening, I thought they were going away because only one was left, then in 20 mins here comes a batch of four more new ones, some as big as dimes, they itch like mad they're spreading, I now have welt dots all along my neckline, one in my hairline and two on my butt lol.

The stuff he prescribed is called MethylPrednisolone tablets USP 4 mg's. 2 in morning 1 at lunch one at super and 2 at bed time.

You should be able to take cortizone cream with it, or benedryl for until it kicks in. Call first thing and ask.

Is it just me or shouldn't you be asking your doctor this question?   :-)

all 4 I was on my way out, The advice nurse says I can take benedryl good thing too cause the pills are not supposed to kick in for 2 days, I couldn't go 2 days with out something to stop the itching and the pain. I am litteraly non functional when they itch, I just get very stresses, very teary and of course VERY ITCHY:P

What I've done in the past for bad cases of poison ivy is ask for a cortisone shot which will take effect immediately because the prednisone pills take a while.

Plus a short course of prednisone is not likely to have any long lasting effects. Long term use of steroids is a lot different than a ten day course.

I'd also try to figure out set this off. Have you changed laundry detergent recently? That's a frequent culprit.

i was just prescribed cyproheptadine (Periactin) for very severe itchin apparently due to my MS.  the benedryl just wasn't cutting it and the morphine was adding to it to make it worse.  i'm hoping this will help but not make me terribly sleepy.

Nope, haven't done one thing differnt than I usualy do, except I walked some dogs on the friday before I started itching, and I doubt it had anything to do with it cause I started itching at night well after the fact, and I hadn't been around the dogs since then and new hives are still appearing.

Mmm Yes, prednisone can be very bad, even if taken in the prescribed dose.  Prednisone, as stated above, can not only lead to diabetes, but can lead to adrenal suppression, which is really a drag.  I myself, have been on over 8 different antihistimines and Atarax is the only one that worked for me.  I suffer from AICU, so I do hope that you feel better soon!!!  If you don't in a day or so, talk to your doctor about having your prescription tweaked.

Have you been tested for any type of autoimmune disorder?  They are quite known to cause such things.

Just a note to those who may be reading this ..

Prednisone can cause Diabetes, but it is * generally* with long term usage. And Steroid induced Diabetes very often disappears when the steroid is stopped. Most of the systemic complications from Prednisone and other corticosteroids are associated with long term use, not short term use.

I am pretty sure Feline is on what is commonly called a Medrol Pack. Which is a week or 10 day tapering dosing of prednisone. This is what is * generally * used to treat  acute episodes such as allergic reactions and hives.

Simply adding this so people won't get all freaked out if they need short term steroid therapy.

You should probably look into some allergy testing.  It could something environmental that you have no idea you have an allergy to because you dont know you could be continually exposing yourself to the allergen.

It sounds to me like a topical allergy, something you have been exposed to on your skin.  But it is difficult to help without seeing the actual effect.

Good luck and I hope things clear up

Owned the dr won't do an allergy test pannel with out SOME idea what it is. I asked. he said as long as they do not have any clue at all what might be causing it they can't test for anything. This break out is totaly random totaly unexplainable, and it's never happend before. And with me doing nothing at all new, their only sollution is wait and see what theydo.
