has anyone out there joined/founded a BDSM book club? what was your experience? i just put out a call for members over craigs list and hope to get the ball rolling on it!! The idea is tempting to me as someone who has done NONE of the *popular* BDSM reading

Congrats on your one year anniversary of being owned passing us by this year mixielicous.
I have read many books on BDSM & had the opportunity to speak to ohthers who've also read them.
I thin kthe problem with a sort of book of the onth club for BDSM'rs is some people will have already read books others have not & some will not be interested in books others enjoy.
Keep us posted as to the progress and growth of your new group.
Maybe you can lay down some things that worked or floped in your venture to help us possibly make one of our own here.

I know there is a kinky book club in my area, I just haven't joined it yet. They do exist!

ah thanks!

i know that people having read the book already is a problem, but that is the same for any book club. i put in the ad that i have read NOTHING as of yet and have already had a reply ... if it goes well i will be very lucky!

it will also be a nominate/vote method so that the book with most appeal will be selected. i am not choosing the books on my own.

While it wasn't a book club per se I did have a top support group where we did a lot of reading.

A good match to something like that is to get authors to talk to you or do online chats after you've read their book(s).  I'd done that and I really liked hearing from readers and speaking to them.

Time, mostly. Finding time for another activity... Plus I work evening shifts on a rotating basis. I can't always guarantee that I can be at the meetings. That makes things a wee bit problematic as well.

do you have any advice for getting in touch with authors, or key phrases i can use to gain their attention?

the response so far is insane! i know not all will pan out but in just a few hours there have been 20 or so voiced interests just between CL and a post in a group called BOSTONBDSM on LJ

You know, there already exists one BDSM book club in Cambridge, MA. It's affiliated with the age-limited group TNG, which you can read more about at www.boston-tng.org. You might want to join the mailing list for TNG and chat with the organizer for tips.

See if you can find their website and contact them via email.

Note that as much as you pay for a book, the author, the person who created it, is usually getting 5-10% only of that money. They aren't wealthy. Therefore your best bets are local or near local authors that you can offer gas money to and a good meal post the readings or discussion. If they can't drive home afterward you'd have to spring for a hotel or if they are trusting a spare room at your house and breakfast in the morning. Since this is a book club and everyone probably has the book all ready you can't offer them that they'd make many sells at the event so covering their costs is important.

If you want to talk to them online just let them know and make it as convenient as possible for them. For example I did an online chat at the BRC back in January.
