ORIGINAL: JerseyKrissi72 Since I have been using Valerian Root I have had a better nights sleep but I don't use it often because I am on anti-depressants and it can cause your heart to race some... I've used valerian root, but I never found it to do anything for me in quantities that I could get into my system. I realize that it's supposed to contain GABA, among other things, and that this should theoretically contribute to sleep, but the amounts are miniscule if you aren't on a GABA-transaminase-inhibitor like valproic acid / sodium valproate (Depakene / Depakote). Never heard anything about making your heart race, though. If you're looking for something "natural", then sleep hygiene works, as does getting 15-30 minutes of sunlight within 2 hours of waking up. Some would consider melatonin "natural", as it appears to be the dominant circadian rythm regulating hormone in our bodies. Myself, if I'm having insomnia, I need something fairly potent. I can stay awake through 4mg rohypnol and 700mg meprobamate with the equivalent of ~560mg morphine in my system and function until it leaves my system, if I want to, even if I didn't have any sleep the past two nights. 0.5-1.0mg rohypnol usually does the trick, though. (No, I don't do illicit drugs.)
