It has recently been discovered I now suffer from this thing...Like I need more problems....anyways....I don't like taking drugs, have a bad history with drug abuse....smoking helps to relieve it some, but being asthmatic....I don't want to keep smoking either. Does anyone know of something natural that I can do to help keep my legs from trying to run away on me?

Quinine.
YOu can find it in tonic water. Mix it with some orange juice or something flavorable and have a glass every day. Once you start using it though, it is the k ind  of drug that if you stop, the symptoms will come back twice as bad.

Sounds like a drug addiction.

Is that the lactose intolerant stuff?

IrishMist -> RE: Need help..restless leg syndrom (4/28/2007 10:33:22 PM)

LOL, it feels like a drug addiction at times.

I came down with RLS when I was pregnant with my daughter and managed for 2 years after before I finally complained to the doctor about it. He told me to drink tonic water for the quinine in it. It worked like a charm and then like an idiot, I stopped drinking it ( it really is nasty to drink ). OMG, it came back twice as bad. Since then, I drink a glass a day and have had not a single problem.

HutchGarahl -> RE: Need help..restless leg syndrom (4/28/2007 11:40:44 PM)

Sounds scary...but refreshing. Where can I find Tonic Water?

wandersalone -> RE: Need help..restless leg syndrom (4/29/2007 4:01:51 AM)

It should be in the supermarkets near the bottles of soft drinks and mineral and soda waters.

HutchGarahl -> RE: Need help..restless leg syndrom (4/29/2007 6:53:07 AM)

Ok thanks.

Yes. Just remember to mix it with something so that the flavor is not so bad because by itself it is pretty nasty ( even with the juice its still pretty nasty but easier to take lol )

LOL! I will, thanks. I don't get to go to the store till next week, but will look for this Tonic Water. This being the correct name I hope and not something i'll be staring in the face and thinking, I shoulda known. [:-]

temptressofsouls -> RE: Need help..restless leg syndrom (4/29/2007 5:15:15 PM)

There should be a store brand that will say tonic water on it.

I've had rls for quite awhile. Tried quinine, requip, exercise, massage, hot baths, ice....I've yet to find anything that works :(

Brands of tonic water:

yes but there are some that taste just like regular milk. also there is a skim milk that has extra calcium in it thats mostly like regular milk.

HutchGarahl -> RE: Need help..restless leg syndrom (4/29/2007 8:34:04 PM)

Ok, I think I know what your talking about now. I've seen this half gallon stuff in the store called Lactose. Looks like milk, but not milk so to speak. Well, I can give it a try. Worst that can happen is it'll taste nasty to me or have the same reaction as milk itself.

I prefer to mix mine with Ketel One vodka and a twist of lime....but I think that might take it out of the "health" beverage category[;)].

On a more serious note, quinine is something that does need a bit of caution. It can cause some health problems. Some of them are mild and some can be serious and life threatening. Most notably it has been associated with thrombocytopenia which is a condition that destroys blood platelets and can lead to serious bleeding or death.

MMMmmm....Love vodka, but your probubly right...not good for the health factor.

Sheesh, if that stuff is that dangerous...why sell it on the open market?

Well, it's just like anything else, in the right quantities for most people it will have no ill effects....and maybe even some benefits. But in the wrong quanties or for the wrong people there could be problems.

Sugar isn't dangerous....unless you're diabetic or you consume too much of it. Penicillin is a good thing....unless you're allergic to it or you over use it.

favesclava -> RE: Need help..restless leg syndrom (4/30/2007 8:38:32 AM)

were you tested for calcium or iron deficiency? sometimes thats what causes it. not always, but milk and red meats sound better than tonic water. will tonic water work if mixed with alcohol?( it's the main use for tonic water)

kazinja -> RE: Need help..restless leg syndrom (5/2/2007 3:18:33 AM)

About quinine: there's quinine as a drug and there's quinine as an ingredient of Indian Tonic water, which is said to have been created in colonial times to make the drug more palatable by adding gin and lemon/lime. However, the therapeutic dosage for malaria is equivalent to 20 to 50 servings of present day tonic water, so tonic water does not protect you  from malaria. The reason I did not name quinine in my list of suggestions is that the amount of quinine in malaria drugs might work for RLS, but is not healthy in the long run and the amount of quinine in a few drinks of tonic probably is too little to have an effect on RLS. It certainly is worth the try though; you should not worry about the amounts of quinine you ingest by drinking tonic. If it helps in these minute amounts, I'd love to hear about it from more people.

Good point mistoferin. Never thought about that.

Yup. Calcium is fine...I do have very low iron though. Doc has me on something called Ferrous Sulf 325mg.

Indian Tonic Water? That actually sounds tastey. Bet I can't get any at Bilo's though. Is ok though, i'll try Canada Dry or Schweppes. I recognize those names. :P

Aswad -> RE: Need help..restless leg syndrom (5/3/2007 4:50:01 PM)

Magnesium, calcium, vitamin C, iron and cut the diet soda. Perhaps a broad-spectrum vitamin B supplement, unless you're diabetic. Get a blood workup and talk to a dietician for advice on proper nutrient balance.

Those would be my initial thoughts if you want to stay away from pharmacologically active substances that are produced under controlled circumstances. Note that all of this advice, except the bit about cutting the diet soda, can be harmful in some cases.

Magnesium and calcium are relevant to nerve conduction. Vitamin B, of various sorts, are implicated in certain synthesis pathways relevant to your nervous system.

There is a correlation with iron in many cases, and taking your iron with vitamin C should increase the uptake of iron. Or was that the other way around? [:D]

A proper sleep schedule could be helped along with melatonin or Rozarem, both of which act on the melatonin receptors, the latter much more strongly (but the latter is also synthetic, which some people worry endlessly about for some reason). Using a course of these, as well as getting 15-30 minutes of sunlight within 2 hours of waking up, will tend to get your rythm in place.

Cut the diet soda in either case, though. The research is kind of inconclusive, but those cases that led to ephedrine being banned were people who also had an unusually high consumption of diet soda. Our national health institute in Norway has put an upper limit of 750ml daily intake of diet soda as the point where they consider it questionable with regards to health effects. Lower intakes may also be a problem for some people. Like me; I've done a blind test on it, with myself as the subject, and get pounding headaches from a glass of diet soda, with a rise in blood pressure. I've observed similar responses in some others, but not most people I know. YMMV.

Be aware that getting too much potassium can be bad for you. A naturopath was recently jailed up here because she suggested so much potassium that the guy died.

Messing with a salt that is involved in regulating your heart without a blood workup in front seems risky to me.

Yes, I have heard this, but potassium is one of the 2 salts our body needs for it's electrolytes, and in a natural diet, would predominate over sodium, but the reverse is extremely the case in the 'modern' diet.

I suggested taking a single OTC tablet at bedtime or when the RLS acted up; it is what worked for me. Does not sound quite the degree you refer to that naturopath as having recommended. If she would prefer to take it via food, she could have a banana or stalk of celery at bedtime instead, perhaps.
