KingLeather -> Custom Leather EXOTIC skin paddles! (4/25/2007 1:27:44 PM)

Im trying to find people who are interested in high end leather products. I make one of a kind hand made leather paddles with exotic skins if you want them. Unlike all the other companies I use only the best leather and skins, but this also makes my product more expensive. I promise you have never seen any paddles out there like mine. Check out my site and tell me what you think www.kingrisqueleather.com or find me on myspace.com my name is KingRisqueLeather.com

Do you know that your exotic leathers are being sourced from renewable resources?  Eg, do you know that you are not helping to drive species into extinction by selling their skins?

Farmed hides and hunted hides from well managed hunting areas governed by permits and quotas are a sustainable resource.  Unfortunately the majority of reptile products other than crocodilian are from non renewable sources that are responsible for seriously devastating populations in Asia and in North America.  It is very difficult if not impossible to buy any snake products that are sustainable.  There are a few sources, but in general reptile products come primarily from two places - the North American rattlesnake roundup market, which is a seriously devastating practice that involves contaminating an entire ecosystem with gasoline, and the Chinese market, which has no legal controls and is completely wiping out irreplaceable species and habitats every year.

Do NOT support non renewable resources that lead to species extinction, please.  I ask that you take some time to look into your sources of animal skins and choose to do business only with those that are renewable and sustainable.

I kinda doubt he is using the kind of skins that are so exotic that they are endangered, or limited.
He is a nice young man that is starting up a new business. Generally new businesses cant afford the high ticket skins. Like elephant, shark, python etc.
I would like to see this artist get a chance at his business.

That actually would not be true.  Some of the most common and cheapest snake skins in the reptile skin trade are very definitely from endangered populations.  It takes extra effort (and sometimes more money outlay) to find snake skins that aren't, actually.

Anything reptile out of Asia is probably bad news for indigenous reptile populations, and rattlesnake skins are extremely bad news as they are produced commercially by means that are absolutely disastrous to local ecosystems and snake populations.  Your best bet if you must have snake skin probably is python or boa, as they're a bit more of a renewable resource.   But artificial is better yet.

For the record, I don't have a problem with properly managed hunting or hide farming, as long as it's done as a renewable resource and isn't grossly cruel (eg, the snakes are not skinned alive, as they are at the rattlesnake roundups that produce almost all North American rattlesnake hides).  The problem I have is with uncontrolled non sustainable harvesting that will eventually result in species extinction and habitat destruction, and I encourage people who deal in animal products to be fully aware of the issues and to take steps to sell only products that are sustainable.

Well unless he is producing thousands of them, its really not an issue.
I use exotic skins, but rarly, and mostly for custom orders. And in reality, people that own and run a business dont have the time to trace the chain of custody of a raw product. I know that I dont have the time to spend finding out how the animal was raised, killed or skinned. And in most cases these hides travel through several sources, so the information is not available at all.
You have a good point and its refreshing to see someone that cares about renewable resources. But in reality we are the first or second to the last owners of these products. You really should target the source if you want some action.
Thats the only way to get results with this kind of issue.

But on another note, this topic is not really ment for this thread. It should be taken up in one of the more appropriate areas of the forums.

Yes it is relevant to the topic at hand, which is this specific business.  I want to know that the folks I'm proposing to do business with are not contributing to the destruction of animals I care about....with my money.  I doubt I'm the only person who feels that way, so I would want to know that the owner of this business takes some care in this respect.

Are you actually representing their policies in your post?

EgosumDominus -> RE: Custom Leather EXOTIC skin paddles! (5/12/2007 2:19:24 PM)

No I am not representing their policies.

Are you planing on buying an exotic skin paddle from them, or someone else?
If not, you are posting your personal views in the wrong place.

I do buy that sort of toy (gee, what a surprise [:D]) and the idea of a custom paddle certainly does appeal, but I have serious concerns about giving money to support habitat decimation or cruel practices.

EgosumDominus -> RE: Custom Leather EXOTIC skin paddles! (5/13/2007 4:33:57 PM)

Point well taken.
Then contacting them direct with a specific kind of hide sounds like the best course of action. I would bet he would source the hides you are ok with using, and make you one.
I say this because I have emailed thoughts back and fourth with him. He's a nice person and the kind of person that wants to do the right thing.
In addition, he does nice work. And if you have read my posts, you know I am brutal when it comes to cheap junk or bad workmanship.
