"New diabetes genetic risk ractors found"

By LAURAN NEERGAARD, AP Medical Writer
Fri Apr 27, 2:25 AM ET

WASHINGTON - Scientists have found clusters of new gene variants that raise the risk of Type 2 diabetes — and how the researchers did it is as important as what they found.

(break)

With Type 2 diabetes, the body gradually loses its ability to use insulin, a hormone key for turning blood sugar into insulin. It is a major cause of heart disease, as high blood sugar damages blood vessels, and leads to kidney failure, blindness and amputations.

Obesity and lack of exercise are chief risk factors. But heredity is involved, too: People with an affected parent or sibling are at 3.5 times greater risk of developing diabetes than people from diabetes-free families.

The new work scanned DNA to find patterns of small gene variations known as SNPs (pronounced "snips") more common in diabetics. SNPs can serve as signposts for tracing disease-promoting genes. To be certain the implicated SNPs were involved, the researchers then checked for them in still more volunteers, ultimately testing DNA from 32,500 people in Britain, Finland, Poland, Sweden and the U.S.

The highest-risk variants can increase by 20 percent someone's odds of developing Type 2 diabetes, the teams reported.

Among the genes implicated:
_One that helps pump zinc into insulin-producing pancreatic cells, raising questions about the metal's role in insulin secretion.
_A pair previously linked only to certain cancers, another brand new area for diabetes researchers to probe.
_A region of chromosome 11 where genes of any sort had never been described."

Thanks for the information.  The main reason i follow the South Beach way of eating is to prevent type 2 diabetes, which my mother suffered from and eventually died from the kidney failure.  Eating lots of cinnamon is also supposed to help.

I am very sorry to hear about your mother dying of this disease.
How do you like the South Beach diet?  Is it easy for you?
How does cinnamon aid in controlling diabetes?

Thank you.

From WebMD: http://diabetes.webmd.com/news/20060404/cinnamon-may-prove-useful-for-diabetes
Here's a short excerpt:
Cinnamon in the Lab
One of Anderson's studies focused on cinnamon's insulin-like effects. In lab tests, Anderson's team found that cinnamon contains antioxidants called polyphenols that boost levels of three key proteins.
Those proteins are important in insulin signaling, glucose (blood sugar) transport, and inflammatory response, the researchers write.

As for South Beach, it is very easy to follow once you get past the 2 weeks of phase one.  I've been following it pretty closely for over 3 years.

Phenols are also in caffeine, tea and dark chocolate.. and are oh so good for you because they reduce nasty reactive oxidases which are released by your cells from lovely little organelles called mitochondrion when your cells are under stress (yes cells can be 'stressed', put them on something hot or forget to feed them and they will get pissed off.. sound familiar?),

Also, would just like to reiterate that having a SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) marker does not mean that the person will get whatever the SNP may cause.. it is just a marker and a probability.

Most people tend to forget/ignore the fact that genes are influenced more then anything by their environment.. screw up your environment or give it the right triggers and your genes may do the wrong thing too!

I've known that I've had a risk for diabetes my whole life especially after my mom was diagnosed with it 30 years ago, but in the past 5 years my 2 sisters, my brother and 2 nephews have all been diagnosed with it as well. Added to the mixture is the fact I've been hypo-glycemic for 22 years. That's one of my biggest reasons for losing weight, keeping it off and excercising whenever I can.
