... and in a whole lotta pain! Those unearthed pearls of Wisdom were cut right out of me on Wednesday.

I'm glad they're gone. Truly I am. I would have hated getting my wisdom teeth out later in life. But the gaping holes where four teeth used to be are now causing me all sorts of trouble.

I've never been big on taking pills for anything. Now I'm taking at least four pills (antibiotics) each day. And on occasion I'll have to toss back a pain pill as well. One of the problems I'm having is that just looking at the pills makes me want to toss my hypothetical cookies. I know they're a necessary evil. But once they're down the hatch I've got to stave off a violent gagging reaction. What gives? Has anyone had a similar problem? And if so, what did you do to conquer the reaction?

I'm also having a persistent problem with drainage. It seems like it's taking for-freakin'-ever for those holes to heal. But in the meantime I've got little blood volcanoes occasionally errupting. I've tried biting on folded napkins, gauze pads and teabags. The teabags worked surprisingly well. But I'm getting a little sick of it all. Anyone have a rough estimate of when this might slack off a bit? Anyone else have their wisdom teeth cut out recently?

Last, but not least, I'm starting to despise chicken noodle soup and mac n' cheese. I can make do with jello. And vanilla ice cream is apparently okay. But I'm going nuts. Any ideas for soft foods would be much, much appreciated!

Swallowing pills is a matter of will and practice. Eventually, when you attain Grand Master Level 25, you will be able to swallow them without water, glasshopper.....

Toothpaste dries cuts and stops bleeding, though how that might work out (and how painful it might be in the circumstances) inside a mouth is another matter.

*Laughs* Had no problem knocking them back the first time... I was dreading what I knew was coming... the numbness wearing off! But now that I'm dealing with a bit less pain it's significantly harder. I think I may get to Level 15 or so by the end of this ordeal though.

Toothpaste hm? I'll have to try that and sod the pain. That's what the pills are for anyway, right? Minty fresh and slowing that sludge from oozing... sounds good to me.

How long have you been draining and did you ask the dentist how long to expect it?  If it is longer than unusal, call the dentist and advise them of that.  Also are you taking anything that might cause additional bleeding like aspirin?  In regards to the pain and taking pills, just put yourself in the mindset that there is no alternative.  noone likes to take pills.

It's only been a few days. So I understand that it's probably normal.

I'm supposed to call if things aren't fairly improved within three days. I'm not gushing at the mouth or anything. It's just an irritating (very irritating) drip. The only meds I'm taking are antibiotics and Ibuprofen.

Try mashed potatoes, pudding, jello, fudge bars (also great for numbing pain), fruit juice slushies, smoothies, bananas, baked potato, cream of wheat, oatmeal for other soft foods.

I understand the hating to take meds part. Ambesol(sp) used to be just for teething pain for babies but they now make an adult version for toothaches as well. Usually found in the toothpaste aisle. Works well and is a topical pain reliever.

After a root canal my DDS suggested packing the opening with cotton balls and a little vaseline during the first few days. The vaseline seemed to help the cotton come out without tearing up any clotting that had taken place. He also suggested teabags as well, which was something I had thought was a bit weird but it also worked for me.

Ibuprofen can increase bleeding. If your dentist suggested that you take it you are probably okay doing so. Cold used tea bags help as compresses to the empty sockets. They help stop the drainage and the cold helps with the swelling and pain.

If you are having major problems with the pills, see if you can crush them and put them in some applesauce. That can make them easier to swallow. Just take the tea bags out before you try to swallow. They cause problems otherwise.

Looks like mashed everything will be my diet for the next few days until I can bite into things again. The slushies sound rather good. I'm trying to stay away from dairy, even though vanilla ice cream feels great initially. But I'm dealing with the tail end of a cold so everything gets converted to phlegm. Yuck.

The doctor who pilfered my teeth also prescribed the pain meds... Along with some Vicodin for any really nasty pain. I must not be too sensitive since I only used two of them during the first day and haven't needed them after that.

I used the tea bags a few times. Each time helped to slow or stop the bleeding. Though the last time I wound up salivating enough to brew tea in my mouth. Horribly bitter at that concentration.

When I'm faced with taking the antibiotics I just focus on the prospect of getting some sort of post-operative infection. That usually helps me choke the pill down. But I'm still plenty hesitant to use the pain meds.

I just had all of mine pulled last Wednesday...they hadn't erupted yet, so I had to have the oral surgury. I looked like the Godfather for three days, and Daddy said I talked like him too.

After the swelling started to go down, that's really when it started to hurt. All of the pain pills they gave me made me sick, so I stuck with the ibuprofen. It's taken a little over a week, but you can't see the swelling unless you knew it was there in the first place and it doesn't hurt until at night...like, as in, right now.

I have become addicted to orange sherbert, unfortunately, and am now trying to kick the habit.

And, don't worry about it. I oozed for a few days and then it pretty much quit. You'll be fine, but if you feel like something is seriously wrong don't be afraid to ask the dentist. You paid him enough money!

Edited to add: I sent you a message on the other side.

A soft food idea: Yogurt! Yogurt comes in sooo many flavours, and it's really good at helping the healing process. And besides the pre-made Yoplait yogurts and stuff like that, you can also mix vanilla yogurt with honey, and that's really good (Greek yogurt).

And definitely fruit slushies, root beer floats, and all of those delicious frozen drinks...and popsicles! You can make popsicles out of any drink you want if you have the mold.

I felt like I was positivly fucking starving when they cut all four of mine out, I couldn't eat enough, You can blend normal food untill it's a puree, and drink it.  I of course didn't think of all the soft food types you could eat and went nuts from hunger.

Yeah. A friend of mine had a bowel inflammation. They had to remove 30cm large intestine and 40cm small intestine. IIRC, he swallowed two handfuls of pills around mid-day, a handful in the morning, and a handful in the evening. I've seen him do one handful without water. Myself, I've never done more than a small handful with, or a couple of pills without, and always prefer soda or something with them.

OP,

The key is to keep your head straight and level when swallowing, so it goes down right, and to make sure they don't stick to your tongue (I usually wet my tongue with a short sip). Don't toss your head back or anything, and try not to toss them with your tongue if they're not sticking, or they'll just bump into the uvula or the soft palate, causing gagging.

If that doesn't work, ask for something sublingual, or a patch, at least for the pain meds. Suppositories may be available for the antibacterials.

Finally, you can try to systematically desensitize your uvula by carefully prodding it until you're comfortable with messing around with a finger inside your throat.

Myself, I've practiced supressing the gag/vomit response instead, initially from an aversion to vomit, and later more consistently, as the meds I took for a few months had a tendency to cause intense nausea at times, frequently without any warning. But, then again, I don't gag from pills anymore, and can't recall how I got over it.

Practice makes perfect, as LadyEllen said. :)

I second the Anbesol recommendation and tea bags.
You have good advice on soft foods and you can also
check out the baby food aisle for pureed most anything.

Gatorade or other sports drinks are great for keeping you
hydrated along with lots and lots of water.

And bite the bullet and take a pain pill when you feel the
worst, you will heal faster and be back to normal sooner.
