Anyone else got this? I was diagnosed a couple of months ago and am just settling into the meds - I'm currently on 800mg of Tegretol which I seem to be ok with but it's definitely having an effect on my mood, I seem to be flatlining most of the time, no big highs or lows anymore. Anyone else on this for other conditions?

Really glad the pain is under control, it was the most excruciating thing I have ever experienced in my life, but it would be nice to see if anyone else lives with this condition

Many thanks

D

I don't have it, but I had a friend who did and I remember the agony she went through.  Meds didn't help her much and she finally had to have the surgery to sever the nerve (this was years ago).  She said that little bit of paralysis was worth it to be rid of the pain.

I'm glad your meds are helping, good luck! :)

My sister had it a few years ago. The meds did make her spacey but she said she would rather have that then the pain. She still has some defecits on her face from the paralysis.

Carbamazepine (Tegretol) is a mood stabilizer and an anticonvulsant.

You could try a different anticonvulsant with less "mood stabilizing" effects, or a tricyclic like nortriptyline. That might reduce the problems with flattened affect.

Alternately, if painkillers work for you, it might be possible to deal with it using long-acting opioid painkillers like buprenorphine or methadone, possibly along with memantine to reduce tolerance buildup, and occasional rounds of Protein Kinase C inhibitors and/or ketamine to reverse it.

Neuralgias aren't something I've looked into, though, but I know a guy who's done some research on treating them with tricyclics, so I could ask him for a clue when/if he's available again. Your own doc is probably a better bet, though.

Cheers for the replies everyone

Aswad, I'm hoping the meds kinda even out, it galls me to be on mood stabilisers when my mood was effin fabulous before this LOL. However, as the OPs have said, the pain is so hideous that I am just grateful for that to be gone. Thanks for the advice though, half of that stuff I haven't even heard of.

Once I've visited the neurosurgeon I'm going to look into having some accupuncture as apparently this has a high success rate. I've had it before for other stuff and love it so I am fingers crossed about that.

I have no idea what your condition means, but I was on Tegretol for several years to treat epilepsy. Yes, it will kill you sex life. Took care of my siezures, but i couldn't orgasm to save my life. That was frustrating as hell, so I talked to my doctor and we tried other meds. Eventually I got to the point I didn't need them at all, and I am happy to say my sex drive is as healthy as it ever was.

Ex-squeeze me? Unable to orgasm?????? *coffs* I don't seem to have hit that just yet but I do know that my moods are very la li laaaaaaaaa.......................*makes flat humming sound*..............very odd indeed. I'm a bit of a drama queen by nature and it is disconcerting to just shrug my shoulders and go meh at things that would normally have me flouncing LOL

Kitte9, really glad to hear you're off the meds and well
