"Migrants become pawns of Mexico druglords"
"Gangs move in on human smuggling as way to keep heat off drugs"

Updated: 5:39 p.m. PT April 30, 2007

SASABE, Mexico - Mexican druglords are taking over the business of smuggling migrants into the United States, using them as human decoys to divert authorities from billions of dollars in cocaine shipments across the same border.

U.S. and Mexican law enforcement officials told The Associated Press that drug traffickers, in response to a U.S. border crackdown, have seized control of the routes they once shared with human smugglers and in the process are transforming themselves into more diversified crime syndicates.

The drug gangs get protection money from the migrants and then effectively use them to clear the trail for the flow of drugs.

Undocumented aliens are used “to maneuver where they want us or don’t want us to be,” said Alonzo Pena, chief of investigations for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Arizona.

Gustavo Soto, a spokesman for the U.S. Border Patrol in Tucson, Ariz., said smugglers are carrying drugs along paths once used primarily by migrants. New fences and National Guard troops have helped seal the usual drug routes, and vehicle barriers are forcing traffickers to send more drugs north on the backs of cartel foot soldiers, he said.

“We have been able to seal many of the drug routes by adding technology and more agents,” Soto said. “We’re seeing a tremendous amount of drugs being seized.”

The advent of drug-trafficking extortionists along the border may also be responsible for much of the drop in illegal immigration that U.S. officials have attributed more directly to better enforcement, Mexican officials and analysts say. "

This is just (another) reason why we need to close that entire border.

*Sigh*  Just wondering if this is the newest "PC" verbiage.  They are no longer illegal aleins, or illegal immigrants.
Now they are "migrants", which proffers yet another, and definitely softer, image.

Won't happen. Both political parties are absolutely terrified of losing the hispanic vote.

This is old news, common sense would tell you this has been happening for decades.
Just easier these days, with so many strolling across the border.

No, the problems along the border are getting worse.
Here in California we are seeing a big increase in gang
violence and this article indicates that the two are related.

Not a good situation at all.

What we need is a new war on drugs...I think we can win this time.

Won't happen under Bush.
Ah,....."the Hispanic vote?"
Ok, they can have the "Hispanic vote" and I'll run against them with the "American Vote" and beat their asses everytime!

Just a question to everyone - when a person is captured trying to cross the border, aren't they just caught and then sent back?  They don't face any criminal charges for doing so do they?

Minnetar, there are no charges individually but "pro se" when they are caught by Border Patrol they are guilty of sneaking into the country.
The ONLY *legal way* you can enter the U.S. is through a "Port of Entry", an airport or ship Customs and Immigration post or an authorised port of entry land point along the Mexican or Canadian borders

Having spent vast amounts of time throughout the non-tourist, interior parts of Mexico, including the Chiapas, I for one would like to see the current ''neocon style'' of goverment there overthrown by the drug cartels and Zapatista rebels.

I honestly believe that the ''privatization'' schemes and the parroted ''Chicago boyz'' neo-feudalistic economic mentality is a serious threat to all peoples throughout the whole western hemisphere.

Sure.

The neo-feudalistic '' privatization'' schemes that are endorsed by neo-liberal-style governments are where a particular country's main assets /infrastructure are ''privatized'' and then owned and controlled by privatized corporate interests. It’s essentially a cooperative between government and large corporate interests.

In essence, a particular countries infrastructure and it's natural resources should be held in public trust, owned by the populace, and not allowed to be monopolized. But in the neo-liberal world, that infrastructure, those assets, are owned /controlled by a small monopoly of private interests.

It's very similar to that of medieval times: Whenever you traveled down a road or crossed a bridge; you had to pay a ''tax'' or ''toll'' to the king or nobleman who owned all the roads and bridges. In today’s neo-liberal system, the corporations have supplanted that of the king /nobleman.

I consistently make the argument that countries belong to the people who live in them, not privatized corporate interests who manipulate them. It coming to a point in time though, where the people may have to fight to take back that of which is rightfully theirs.

Sorry this isn't something i am very knowledgable about.  Many of the states in the US have privatized jail and prisons.  Why do you think this is such a bad thing for Mexico?

Well... think about it:  When you privatize jails and prisons that provides someone with an opportunity to make a profit / money.

If the whole prison system were privatized, you'd have lobbyists bargaining with the politicians to make spitting on the sidewalk punishable by one year in prison.

Same thing with the roads....If the road system was sold off to greedy corporations to opperate and charge a toll.....what do you think would happen?

minnetar -> RE: "Migrants become pawns of Mexico druglords" (5/1/2007 8:03:32 PM)

i have only heard good things about the privatization of jails and prison.  i know indiana's governor is continually thinking about doing it with more industries.  He just sold a toll road so the jury is still out on that decision.

Have you actually ever given it some serious, logical thought, besides what ''you've heard''?

If so....by all means tell me what's good about it.
