This takes a few minutes to load but is well worth the wait.

"Mount Etna stages light show" - BBC video and audio

Europe's most active volcano, Mount Etna, has erupted on the southern Italian island of Sicily.

Ahhh! I've seen Mt Etna many times both day and night transiting in the Straights of Messina between Italy and Sicily on a U.S. Navy ship.
It used to throw out sparks at night and give us a nice light show.
And in the day it used to look like clouds from a distance with it's snow covered cap.

That is so cool, Popeye!

I took several geology classes in college.  Volcanoes fascinate and intrique me;
really want to visit the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, http://www.nps.gov/havo/

That's Vulcan's forge. I wonder who he's doing contracts for. Looks like it's push week. Or being May Day, perhaps it's labour strife with the cyclopses.

Pretty colours.

I plan on hiking on a few active volcanoes in Washington State this summer with my UM. There are steady tremors under two mountains fairly close to where we live, and so she should feel her first minor earthquake. That, and she'll have bragging rights when these volcanoes do finally blow!

Here's a good link for an interesting news article about active NW USA volcanoes:

Sisters, Oregon has what may be a new volcano coming up

This whole region is very interesting that way. There are lava tubes only an hour from my home, and thick sheets of old lava cover much of Southern Idaho. Boise has a lot of geothermal water on tap which means it's very hot not far under the surface here, and they even say that Yellowstone could blow in a phenomenal explosion some day

Vulcan/Hephestus is such an amazing archetype.  It has been pointed out that he was the only god
of the Greco-Roman Pantheon who worked and created items of great beauty.
