ATLANTA - New government numbers give some of the strongest evidence yet that menopause hormones can raise the risk of breast cancer.

Rates of the disease leveled off in 2004 after plunging in 2003, the year after millions of women stopped taking hormones because a big study tied them to higher heart, stroke and breast cancer risks.

Experts said the leveling off shows that the 2003 drop in the cancer rate was real and not a fluke.

That's kind of scary ya know. I'm 42. About the age most women begin minopause I believe. While I haven't started myself...well, doc said I haven't...I expect to at any given time. So reading this I am assuming it can cause a greater risk of me getting breast cancer? Gee...lovely. As if I don't have enough problems already. Doesn't surprise me though. Cancer runs rampid in my family.

Breast cancer runs in my family so i never took any hormone replacement.

LOL! I have enough crazy hormones running inside me now as is. Don't need to add any more. [8D]

If you have breast cancer, they can test the cells and see if they are hormone-receptive.

I was really hoping that hormone replacement would be a reality for me because of my risk for osteoporisis, the fact that estrogen replacement keeps skin more supple, and it also preserves the lining of the vagina from thinning... all things I am rather interested in as I approach menopause. I suppose I will just have to accept that it will not be an option for me... the risks outweigh the gains[:(]

Do you have a history of breast cancer in your family, julia? Any other risk factors?

Definately talk with your gynocologist and keep researching the different possibilities
in advance for the time when you finally enter the "grand-mother's lodge".
(As menopause is called in many Native American groups.)
