But, seriously, it's just that the forum assigns a kind of "title" based on the number of posts. Almost all forums have it. And who cares what the people in the street call you?

You'd have to be pretty susceptible to external influences for that to be the case. I'm sorry, but this just sounds silly.

With all due respect, NLP is hardly science. I've studied both. And while I'm ready to admit that certain language patterns may affect a persons' frame of mind, that requires a fair bit of tailoring to the person in question, and the shifts are incremental, so you'd need to be pretty close to thinking something like that in order for it to affect you. More likely, it'd have a desensitizing effect.
I have a friend and a couple of acquaintances that are all really into NLP, and this kind of thing would have them rolling on the floor laughing in short order. Sorry, no offense intended.
Even if you assign a lot of credibility to the theories you've read, I'm sure you can quite easily understand that the relative impact of those words in the margin will be trivial in comparison to the posts themselves. If you're concerned about what effect single words can have on you, you should be plugging your ears and never reading anything, as any kind of meaningful communication would have too much impact on you. Again, sorry if this seems offensive.
Also, unless you actively read the words, they will be in your periphereal vision. We humans have a very tight cone per eye, effectively overlapping, where our vision is focused enough to make out letters in that font size. ISTR that cone is from an arc of about 6 degrees, which would leave room for about 3-4 lines height and 3-5 words width. In scanning this across a post, you don't get the word in focus, so if you're worried about it, just stop reading people's names.

Not all forums allow that, although I agree that it might be best to allow people to set this themselves. Not everyone gets the joke, and some who do still take offense. The usual reason being the vanilla cones when someone experienced joins the board. If we can't make people think reasonably about it, we might as well allow them to change it to their own liking, rather than wasting threads on it.
