TASKMASTER Clouds move eastward as the sky is purified The desert night fitfully withers away Desert life wakens to begin a new day The sun cooks away the night’s dew A hawk floats above like a dark jewel Making a mere reflection on a still pool Mountains roll playfully in golden splendor The earth breaths out dreams of vanished generations Not making any judgments or interpretations Heat prowls the land like a living thing Wild roses prick and bloody the morn In this first light before real dawn But, the east will soon bear a daughter of darkness As the day cools, trees shiver and to the wind they sing, Fearful of what the night may bring Like a dragon’s egg, the sun cracks itself Spilling a crimson and gold yoke upon Earth’s breast While scarlet twilight drains away in the west Heat stored in the desert’s heart rises Making the mountains quiver in anticipation The sky at last grows weary in supplication Pressing an anxious breath upon the stillness The moon looks down on the earth below Stars shine their wisdom as they glow All is renewed, and all must fade Such says the taskmaster, time As he moves on and leaves the world behind
