You are contageous until you've had 24 hours on the antibiotics. You can't go by fever because some kids don't run them.
That part I knew, and I have about 12 more hours before that time is up. I was just hoping that I had not passed it to everyone else in the house!
I can only hope that since I never get Strep B and that is what most people get, that it is not going to jump to anyone else. (Strep B is the one they have the instant test thing for.)
As a kid I got this all the time, as an adult it has been very often.
Going to the student death center was always the worst.
"I have strep, give me antibiotics."
"We have to do a culture."
"Fine, do a 24-hour culture and give me antibiotics."
"We have this 5 min / 15 min {whatever} test we can do."
"It won't work. I need a 24 hour culture and antibiotics."
"We have to do this one first."
"Fine. It is not going to work. Can you do both swabs at the same time."
"No, we need to do the short one first."
They do it. Guess WHAT! It comes back negative.
"We need to do the 24 hour culture."
"I know. Can you give me my prescription now."
"Not until we get the results back."
"Can you call the prescription in?"
"No, you will have to come back."
"Fine. Do the swab."
"Do you think that you might have allergies?"
"No. It is strep throat. I need antibiotics."
24 HOUS LATER I CALL
"Hi. My name is Aylee, is my culture finished?"
"Wait please. . . . You have strep throat. You need to come down and get a prescription for antibiotics."
"Really?!?!"
