That lube thing irks a bit... there can be such a thing as too much for the first time. Really, barring tiny skin tears and the like, the friction itself doesn't amount to all that much. But a lot of lube and a bit of pressure can let you "slip in" rather suddenly, which can be an unexpected surprise. Since the difficulties are mostly around expectations and psychology, the surprise can be a negative experience. A bit of patience can make all the difference, as a slow and steady pressure won't usually hurt without advance warning (which would be his cue to wait a bit). The "pop" of slipping can be far more sudden. Lube deals with friction, and does jack for the sphincter muscle itself. That was the snag for us, at least, and I know it has been so for others. Hence, testing the waters with a finger before deciding just how much lube is enough, seems prudent. "Tons of lube" is a rule of thumb which gets repeated too often without an explanation, IMHO.
