I used to keep my nails long and painted black or dark cherry.
Then I started getting into rope bondage: I'd rather work knots than admire my glossy manicure.

I began carrying a nail clipper with me when I was taking piano in college. That way when I struck a key at just the wrong angle for my nails (natural lifelong) and one broke, I could clip it to a curved edge with no vicious corners. Without the clipper, I would simply chew off the broken nail, which generally landed me painfully close to the quick.

Then I took my long-postponed typing course, and that simply reinforced the need to have clippers in my purse or on my person at all times.

Fast forward a few decades, and I've never been sorry. Serial careers that involved ten-key, data entry, and eventually full technical writer have demanded that my nails be manageable at all times.

Nowadays? I may be retired, but…fisting anyone demands at least one hand with short nails (although I have been told that one can protect both the bottom and the manicure with a ball of cotton in the tip of each finger of the glove). The risk of damage to the bottom, especially when fisting anally, is at the very least a mood-spoiler, with potential to do actual damage enough to require surgical repair.

Me, when I want to do some serious scratching, I put on my "stainless manicure". And, y'know, it's amazing how subby people get when they drool at them and I offer to run the tips down their arms. It's given rise to a number of lovely scenes!
