Thanks for the info, Aswad - that was interesting.  I played the same asinine 'hold your breath' game at school, incidentally.  It never turned into a great fetish, fortunately. On a general note, it's reassuring to know that dominants of either sex actually investigate these things.

You're welcome. Popular game, I guess. Shame we didn't know the danger back then.

As for investigation, if the point is to induce the fear response that generally pops up after a little while, then a safer way to do that is to use carbon dioxide. Talk to a pneumologist with experience in diving and critical care to get advice on a good supplier for gas tanks and a breathing mask with mixer, what preparations to make, how to deal with (and detect) problems before they turn into emergencies, what to do if they do turn into emergencies, and so forth. Most likely, you will want something like 70% Nitrox32 and 30% spectroscopically pure CO2.

I have recommended that as a way for people who live with anxiety sufferers to experience what the person is going through, as it is generally almost impossible for the vast majority of the population to understand exactly how crippling that condition can be. When they give up breathing the modified air after a few minutes (if even that), you calmly explain that an anxiety attack can easily be at least as bad, and will last anywhere from minutes to several hours, without the option of just taking a mask off to stop it. Usually, people really get the problem at that point, and become a lot more understanding (and frequently better able to comfort and reassure someone experiencing a panic attack).

I am not a doctor, so I'm not going to say it's safe, but I would guess it's "close enough."

Health,
al-Aswad.

Aswad,

Thanks.  Again - fascinating and I'll return to this page should the matter ever come up in real life.

For all but one kink (which I love for its own sake) that I read about on this forum, I have pretty much the same attitude.  This is "Would I enjoy it?  If not, could I handle it?"  Nearly all things I think I could handle. (In theory, mark you.  The proof of the pudding's in the eating.)  I've often said that I think I could handle anything that a) doesn't smell too badly or b) entails a high risk of putting put me in hospital.  B) here is pretty clearly a problem.

The fear aspect is something else again.  On this forum, the subject came up of how to induce a frisson of that without at the same time exposing a sub to real danger.  Trickery was one of the chief answers.  I suggested that if femdoms wanted to share such tricks, they might want to do it in private.

Hmm. I was not of the informed opinion that 1) the CM forums were reknowned for delicacy in any form, 2) that such delicacies were somehow expected of Me nonetheless, or that 3) I was here to please you, peon.
Oops! How silly of Me to presume..

One way to explore this I suppose is to focus on the *control* rather than restriction. For example, in yoga classes, they tell you when to inhale and exhale. In music classes, they focus on breathing from the diaphragm rather than the chest, and how to use your breath more effectively. In dance and horseback riding, breath is used a lot for relaxation, timing, and sometimes even as cues. In BDSM as well as Lamaze classes, breathing techniques can help improve pain processing/coping. Perhaps exploring some of those aspects might feed your desires in a way that you don't need to fear causing damage?

I have enjoyed it in my past relationships (mainly on the receiving side) but haven't done it for many years and it's a hard limit for my wife/mistress so it's a non-issue.  Reading these posts kind of makes me feel lucky that nothing serious ever came of it when I did play with partners who enjoyed both giving and receiving.  There is an incredible high - climaxing as you move toward the edge - I understand the subtle power for those that like to dance on the edge of danger.  Not sure I really understood how seemingly dangerous it is which is probably one of the biggest problems - uninformed participants.  Be safe.

Coming from my Topside on this one,

No I wont do breath play. To big of a risk for me, squicks me out as a TOP to do that.

As a bottom on the other hand....I'll submit to it if i trust the person.

Weird I know...

Ok, how about deranged subby boi, is that better? Not that you didn't invite this when you so cheekily saw fit to criticize Me earlier, but really, I'm laughing as I leave you. No harm no foul, now run along.

I quite like breathplay, as long as it's between two consenting individuals who are fully aware of the risks and have researched the "safest" ways in which to do it. Yeah, it comes with risks, but so does deep-sea diving, skydiving, mountain climbing, climbing trees, crossing the road... assess the risks and figure out the ways in which you are most likely to avoid the dangers. When it's done by a sane, responsible Top or Dom/me who has done the research, it can be an extremely exhilarating form of play. :)

Well personally, I find Eclipse Wintergreen Mints control my breath satisfactorily.

Excuse me.

It's about what?

Ohhhhhh.

Never mind.

Even if you have a lot of experience with it, you can suddenly get a heart attack and there is no way to determine when it will happen.

I have heard the same and I appreciate that you researched the matter enough to have come across this information.

From what I recall reading when I researched the matter, when the oxygen levels reaching the brain begin to drop, the brain sends a signal to the heart to pump faster. If this signal from the brain reaches the heart at a critical point of the cardiac cycle, it can lead to cardiac arrest. So it is not a matter of precautions but a matter of chance based on timing.

I am not sure what the odds are of hitting that critical point of the cardiac cycle. Many of us have held our breath without having this cardiac arrest. So some people are willing to take the risk based on how small they think the odds are of such an outcome.

I have done some breath play in the form of holding breath on command. I think dunking is also sexy. I might engage in it again from time to time. Because even now sometimes I hold my breath from time to time. For instance, the other day I went to a public restroom to pee and someone was taking a very nasty dump. I held my breath the entire time ;-)

Cheers,

Sea

Did you reach sub-space on that occasion, Sea?

Yes the heart starts firing extra PVC's and every PVC can possibly cause a cardiac arrest. It can happen after a few minutes, you really can't know when it will start. Also you can't know how long the heart will continue to fire PVC's, so it's also possible to get a cardiac arrest hours after play.

Thanks for the advice, but I'm afraid that it's something completely different.

As bdspirit says : There is an incredible high - climaxing as you move toward the edge.
But it's just not worth de risk. When I participated in it, I was completely unaware of the risks and I'm sure My partner was to. I had never heard of bdsm at that time, I just found out I liked to be strangled by My vanilla-boyfriend.
But since My lifestyle changed to bdsm, I'm very responsible, I read a lot and I make sure I know all the danger before I participate in anything.

Well, everybody thanks for your opinions.

greetings, Miss Dita
