I admit I am not looking forward to tomorrow. I'm having a laser treatment on my left eye. Somehow, being told to open my eye while a laser burns small holes in it is making me nervous as can be.
Come Friday, my vision should be improved vastly and I should have, or at least have ordered new glasses. All good things, it's just the getting there that disturbs me.

Des, I wish you well. I had laser surgery on my eye and it was painless. the method of ensuring the eye remains open leaves a very weird feeling in the pit of the stomach and you should ask for a minute or two break. My vision improve immensly, so it's worth the discomfort

Platt and Ellison both had issues with him wearing an SS belt to a convention and describing the SS as exemplars of military virtues, apparently. There was a lengthy rant about this in one of Platt's Interzone columns.

Barring the atrocities in which the SS were involved in, he was referring to the other noted aspects of the SS units, discipline, etc.

However, he admitted that with all that was to be admired about the SS, their devotion to and loyalty to just one man, Adolf Hitler, was their greatest weakness and flaw.

Drake has spoken in various essays on some of the greatest military units in history, from the legions of Rome to the Immortals of Persia. Each in its own right was the epitome of military virtues, while at the same time, presented some of the great problems with units of such devotion. In the case of the legions, the devotion was not so much to Rome, but the General who commanded them, hence the reason why Caesar's legion followed him into Rome itself, despite the fact that to do so was both illegal and for the time, against regulations (for lack of a better term.)

Prior to ordering his Immortals to attack the Spartans for the second time at Thermopylae, Xerxes ordered them to kill their wives and camp followers who had accompanied them on the march, since he decided that the Immortals had failed because the night before the battle they had been fucking around.

And the Immortals followed the order to the letter.

It's entirely possible that Platt and Ellison's beef is less the SS thing in itself than the fact that Drake didn't offer an immediate apology and offer to ritually burn his belt in front of an audience at the convention: they're both famously bullish and unpleasant men themselves. (Platt's also notorious as a cheerleader for the libertarian right in SF, so maybe he just seized the chance to attack another writer for being even further to the right than he is...)

Given that the Immortals are best known for failing to take a pass defended by only three hundred men, they're maybe an odd group to pick out as all time greats? Okay, the historical accounts we have of that (most notably Herodotus) were written by Greeks and slant the description in favour of the home team, but even so. I take it Drake has it that the Immortals were lions led by a donkey and that the failure to take Thermopylae was more down to Xerxes than his troops?

Des: Good luck.

In the Immortals defense, given the topography of the pass at the time of the battle, there was really no way to push the line to break it.

In point of fact, the only way the Spartans were defeated was to be hit from front and rear at same time after a traitor told Xerxes about the secret pass that bypassed the one held by the Spartans.

I admit that if I lived on Stock Island in Florida, I would be seriously asking for volunteers.
I admit that the son of an old boss has decided to give old wooden hulled boats and classic boats that were abandoned on the yard away to anyone willing to take over the repair/restoration.

I admit his father must be spinning in his grave because he has also said that all parts and supplies would be sold at his cost, no mark up, with no yard fees.

True.
Did you read about the Irish (or properly Celtic, as I think forces from France and Scotland were involved as well) invasion of Greece in 279? Brennus' forces supposedly got through Thermopylae with a lot less trouble than Xerxes had over that.

I admit to being curious whether DesFIP's laser treatment went well.

You do know that sea levels were higher when xerxes tried to push through than they were in 279?

Of course, considering climate change arguments, the pass will return to the historic state in about 125 years.....

I admit I cannot find an answer to a maritime law legal question:

If a privately owned vessel is flying the flag of its nation of registry, which laws apply on board the vessel while in a foreign port?

American flag in foreign ports is subject to American laws, same thing if Italian ships flying the Italian flag in American waters...I believe international waters is fair game.

Were you trying to send me desserts??? I can go for some...

I admit "yes" am posting it off next week😊

I admit our trip to my parents in law was hard work😣

I admit that was due to mother in laws behavior towards me...way too clingy and way too patronizing😡

I admit I was just glad when we left😒

I admit it is a tricky situation for me cause she is (I think) 79 and we are happy about every year she can see growing up our UM...however I'm almost 40, too and don't need to be treated like a 10 year old😡

I admit my father in law was much easier for me to cope with...

Thanks all, it was quick and painless. Barring being yelled at yet again for leaving it this long. Apparently he did cataract surgery all morning and this follow up procedure all afternoon. It reminded me of nothing more than one of my son's first computer games where he would blow up space garbage. The doc was focusing in on, and then vaporizing cells in the fluid of the eye. Looked the same and sounded the same. Which makes me suppose the game designer had had LASIK surgery.

Unfortunately my next appointment isn't for two weeks, and that's when I'll get a new scrip for glasses. Until then, the eyes aren't focusing together.

I'd always thought that was down to the Celts being Irish (mostly) rather than Persians, but a wider pass would have been easier to get chariots through, true enough. I thought that was more traditionally blamed on the decline of Greece into decadence (that men were no longer such men as they were in the old days, and today's pantywaists know nothing of the art of war, these days even the Spartans are wusses, all that stuff Homer spends a couple of pages whining about at the start of the Illiad) than environmental factors, so thanks for pointing that out.

I admit I am miffed at Fedex today. They could not find my house even though I got a package from them last week. I have to wait for my new phone tomorrow even though I was promised overnight delivery by my carrier. I told them to never rely on GPS best I am in one county but the mailing addy is in another town (rural areas do this a lot). So I have to stay home while Mom runs to town and get things done. She tires too easily.

We have a friend who is in one town, the mailing address is a second, and the school system is in a third.
It's a miracle they can ever get guests over.

I admit I enjoy using Lucy as the point of some of my paranoid, delusional accusations made in jest....
I admit that I am presently photoshopping proof she is responsible for a certain current US Presidents rise in politics, which involves a black and white photo of Dr. Frankenstein's lab from an one of the early Frankenstein movies.....

I admit I've been up all night painting.

I admit I had an old painting I was never satisfied with, so I pulled it out and added detail and more vibrant colors and I'm very happy with it. I admit my 3 y/o granddaughter was always trying to run off with it saying, "mine!" And her mom kept putting it back, so I'm making it a gift for her to hang on her wall in her bedroom.

I admit I had a great deal of fun with an expressionist style painting that I'm going to paint over, as it came close but isn't right. I'm looking forward to painting what I'm seeing and feeling. I admit, I might not get any sleep at all.

I admit today, or well I guess it is technically yesterday, was bad; so bad I just went back to bed and slept until 7.
I admit I woke up thinking I'd slept all night and it was 7 am. Nope, 7pm.

I admit I'm glad I only injured my left hand, since I'm right handed, but damn it makes doing things difficult.

I admit I'm babbling on here, as I bounce back and forth between needing to sleep and obsessing about the painting in my head.

I admit my friend calls it The Call of the Canvas.

I admit the Ibuprofen is making me sleepy, so bed it is.

I admit, ttfn
