The ambivalence mentioned is largely related to cultural ideas about discussions of that nature. It isn't that bisexuality does not exist, but very few are willing to admit it unless they're among familiar company. The idea of doing such to a stranger is unfathomable for some. I use the term loosely because a lot of that is irrelevant or eradicated when they're exposed to different ideas.

You're speaking in absolutes and I don't believe your assessments are applicable to everyone, most for that nature. With all the sociological elements raised, in the end people like what they like. I think some of the ideas promoted by others are a mild attempt at explaining something that really doesn't require such.
Interracial dating does not stem from escapist behaviors, discomfort from ones background, or a dislike of the opposite sex in ones ethnicity. Maybe people do it because they find it appealing. Much like they choose a dish, a piece of clothing, or a person to befriend and relate to. Yet we don't see the same stigmas attached to each. Perhaps it isn't as complex as suggested and the truth is really simple, too simple for some to accept.
